Flamenco dance
program scheduled
The Sonidos Gitanos Gypsy Flamenco dance company will perform at 8 p.m. on Sept. 17, in UNLV's Artemus Ham Hall.
Tickets for the concert range from $17.50 to $42.50 and may be purchased at the UNLV Performing Arts Center box office or at Dillard's department stories. Discounts are available for students, seniors, military and disabled.
Translated, "sonidos gitanos" means gypsy sounds. The show will be presented at UNLV by a company of dancers, singers and musicians who are masters of gypsy flamenco. The performers are under the artistic direction of Maria Bermudez.
Brewer returns
to direct shows
Robert Brewer, director of the graduate Musical Theatre Program at UNLV, is returning from a year's hiatus to direct "Les Liaisons Dangereuses," which opens Oct. 1, and "Happ'ly Ever Aftering With Lerner & Loewe" which begins a run on Feb. 4.
"Both plays represent incredible challenges for different reasons," Brewer said. "Both, in some ways, are very personal statements."
Brewer's career as a director at UNLV over the last nine years has been demonstrated in such productions as "And the Angels Sing," "The Mikado," "110 in the Shade," "Kiss Me Kate," "Amadeus," "A Little Night Music," "Jesus Christ, Superstar," and "Closer Than Ever."
Currently, Brewer is developing two musical productions. First is his original musical "Alberta" about the life of blues singer Alberta Hunter which has been optioned for Broadway by Palisades Entertainment Group Inc. Secondly, Bud Widney and Brewer are developing the new musical based on the lyrics of Alan Jay Lerner entitled "Happ'ly Ever Aftering With Lerner & Loewe" which will have its world premiere at UNLV.
"Les Liaisons Dangereuses," according to Brewer, is about "love, sex and deception and how one phrase can ruin a reputation. I view the play as a moral war between two philosophies -- one of heroic love (conquest) and the other romantic (fidelity)."
Tickets for all theater productions at UNLV will go on sale Saturday and may be purchased at the UNLV Performing Arts Center box office or at Dillard's department stores.
