Golf tournament
to help Boy Scouts
The Boy Scout Invitational Golf Tournament is scheduled for Oct. 7 at Stallion Mountain Golf Club, at 5500 E. Flamingo Road.
The tournament -- a four-person scramble -- will begin with registration and a barbecue lunch at 11:30 a.m. and a shotgun start at 1 p.m.
Various competitions and prizes will be given for the longest drive and closest to the pin, plus premier hole-in-one prizes and the grand prize which includes a trip for four to the 1999 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Tournament.
Entry fee is $375 per person, with foursome team packages including tee and/or green sponsorships also available.

seeks participants
A youth baseball league in the Northwest is looking for teams ages 10-16 to play on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays starting in September and playing until February.
Fields, balls and umpires will be provided for games.

Senior workshops are scheduled weekly at the Dula Gymnasium, on the corner of Bonanza Road and Las Vegas Boulevard.

slates tryouts
The Amateur Athletic Union Southern Nevada Bulldogs Baseball Club will hold tryouts at the Sam Boyd Stadium complex from 5:30 to 8 p.m. tonight, for kids 13 and 14 years old.
YMCA to offer
youth basketball
Registration for YMCA Fall Youth Basketball Leagues will be accepted through Sept. 13. Boys and girls in grades one through eight are eligible to participate.
Games will take place Saturdays, Oct. 3 through Nov. 21. Registration fees include a team jersey.
Emphasis is placed on building individual skills and teamwork, and every child will play in each game.

to help UMC kids
The Doctor vs. Lawyers Charity Softball game to benefit University Medical Center's Children's Miracle Network is scheduled for Saturday at Cashman Field.
Participants are trying to raise $10,000. The Las Vegas Stars baseball club will donate $2.50 of every ticket sold in advance to the network.
Gates open at 3 p.m., and tickets are $5, which includes the regularly scheduled season game between the Stars and Tacoma Mariners.

for hoops game
The Big Famous Celebrity Basketball Classic is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 5 at the South Padre outdoor amphitheater at Texas Station.
Tickets for the basketball game are $17.50 for adults and $12.50 for children under 12 and may be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets or at the Texas Station Winners Center.
A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Children's Rights Against Abuse Through Funds and Trades, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of underprivileged children.
Scheduled to play are Chris Weber of the Sacramento Kings, Greg Anthony of the Seattle SuperSonics, Cedric Ceballos of the Dallas Mavericks, actress Vivica Fox and performers Ronnie DeVoe, Ricky Bell, Yoyo and Naughty By Nature.
The tournament will include a celebrity banquet at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 4, at Texas' Armadillo Lounge, followed by a pre-game party at 10 p.m. at The Padded Cell Night Club. Tickets for the banquet are $150 and tickets for the party are $15 and may be purchased by calling Byron Wesley at 437-2800.

The Hemophilia Foundation of Nevada will hold its sixth golf tournament on Sept. 27 at Angel Park Golf Club.
This year's tournament will be a partnership with the Las Vegas Chapter of the PGA, which hosts a Pro-Am tournament. All proceeds benefit the hemophilia foundation's services and programs.
Best ball scramble format with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Cost is $150 per golfer and includes green fees, cart, dinner, silent auction and prizes. There will be a hole-in-one contest to win a 1998 Chevrolet Camaro.

Las Vegas Aztecs
wins AABC World Series
The Las Vegas Aztecs, a group of 11-year-old baseball standouts, captured the American Amateur Baseball Congress World Series on Aug. 16 in Albuquerque, N.M.
Heading into the final round with a 6-0 record, the Aztecs needed only one victory, while Central Valley, Calif. needed two.
Central Valley forced a decisive game with a 4-2 win, but ran into trouble when Aztecs pitcher Chris Carter took command.
The young hurler tossed a three-hitter and struck out eight as the Aztecs took the title with a 6-1 win.
The Aztecs, comprised of 11 players from the Northwest, Sunrise and Green Valley areas, upped their record to 62-10 since January
Members of the championship squad are: Northwest residents Ryan Pottete, Jeff Farnum, Danny Ramirez, Justin Kuehl, Jordan Muir, Tony Musante, Aaron Prado and Adam Simpson; Green Valley's Mike McKieage and Jordan Gibson; and Sunrise residents Gary Barber and Neil Medchill.
