Lecture focuses on
mental health, fitness
A 1 1/2-hour lecture today at Whitney Senior Center will focus on maintaining mental fitness and improving memory. Start time is 10 a.m. at the center, 5712 Missouri Ave. Refreshments will be provided at the free seminar.
Double pinochle is played every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and Thursdays at 1 p.m. in the senior center.
Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 11:30 a.m. Seniors are asked to call at noon the day before to sign up for lunch. There is a $1.75 donation per person.

Quilters to meet
at Sunrise Library
The Sunrise Mountain Quilt Circle will meet at 7 p.m. today inside Sunrise Library, 5400 Harris Ave.
Quilt circle members have a variety of interests, from hand and machine construction to basic quilting.
The quilt circle, represented on the Desert Quilters of Nevada board, meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday inside the library. Membership and meetings are open.

Firefighters raise
money for MDA
Local firefighters on Friday will kick off their 37th year of helping fight muscular dystrophy.
A kick-off celebration begins at 10 a.m. at County Fire Station No.18, 575 E. Flamingo Road. Firefighters will then hit the streets asking motorists to "fill the boot" for the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Southern Nevada.

Single parents' group
slated to meet at park
Parents Without Partners will meet at 5 p.m. Sunday at Freedom Park, 800 N. Mojave Road.
The nonprofit group caters to single parents and their children and holds monthly meetings around town.

Candlelighters sets
group meetings
Candlelighters for Childhood Cancer Treatment Support Group meets on the second Wednesday of the month in the skyroom at Sunrise Hospital, 3186 S. Maryland Parkway.
Candlelighters bereaved support group meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. inside the Gestalt Therapy Institute, 3360 E. Russell Road.
Attendants are asked to confirm participation at least two days prior to the meeting.

Health district looking
for care volunteers
The Clark County Health District is looking for volunteers for its transitional care program.
Transitional care volunteers offer emotional support and assistance to terminally ill people and their families.
Volunteers receive 38 hours of training on the history and philosophy of transitional care, listening and communication, stress management, providing support, bereavement techniques and legal and medical matters.
Volunteers must be 18 or older, available three to five hours a week, be in good health, have transportation and have not experienced a major personal loss within the previous year. They serve in six-month increments.
An application and personal interview are required prior to training which starts on Thursday, Feb. 26. Edie Blanchard, health district coordinator for Volunteer Services, encourages people to call before coming.

City offers trolley
services for seniors
The City of Las Vegas' Transportation Services Division operates trolley service for seniors seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The trolleys operate out of the downtown transportation center, 300 N. Casino Center.
