Lecture to focus
on media coverage
Robert Siegel, host of National Public Radio's "All Things Considered," will speak at UNLV on Friday as part of the University Forum lecture series.
"Does Anyone Know What News Is?" will be the topic of his presentation, which is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Classroom Building Complex, Room A106.
Why the news media cover the stories they do will be one of the issues Siegel will discuss.
Now that there is no Cold War abroad and a bipartisan consensus exists at home on foreign, monetary, fiscal and many social policies, the defining edge of conflict has been taken off many of the traditional subjects of news reporting, Siegel asserts. At the same time, he notes, new technologies have made reporting possible from nearly anyplace on earth.
All University Forum lectures are free and open to the public. No tickets are required.
The University Forum lecture series is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and underwritten by the UNLV Foundation. Siegel's presentation also is being sponsored by KNPR, the Las Vegas affiliate of National Public Radio. For more information on the series, call 895-3401.

Interim dean named
for Graduate College
UNLV biology professor Penny Amy has been selected to serve as interim dean of the university's Graduate College.
Amy, who has taught at UNLV since 1985, began her new job Jan. 5. The Graduate College administers all of UNLV's doctoral and master's degree programs.
"Penny proved her administrative abilities when serving as chair of the biological sciences department. We believe she will be an asset to the Graduate College," said UNLV President Carol C. Harter.
Provost Douglas P. Ferraro concurred, saying, "We know Penny will be able to provide the Graduate College with the type of leadership it needs as we increase the graduate intensity of UNLV."
Amy has received many awards over the years. Among them are being selected as a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and as the 1992 Barrick Scholar and Outstanding Researcher at UNLV. She also has received awards from the Board of Regents of the University and Community College System of Nevada for both her teaching and research.
She earned a doctoral degree in microbiology from Oregon State University and both a master's and a bachelor's degree in biology from Portland State University.
Senator to address
building civil society
Former U.S. Sen. Bill Bradley will speak at UNLV on Feb. 2 as part of the Barrick Lecture Series.
His talk, "Building a Stronger Civil Society," is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall. The event is free, but tickets are required. Tickets will be available at the Performing Arts Center box office at Ham Concert Hall beginning Saturday. For more information, call 895-3801.
Bradley, D-N.J., was elected three times to the Senate, the last time being in 1990. When he left the Senate, he was the third-ranking Democrat on the Finance Committee and also served on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee and the Special Committee on Aging.
In 1995, he announced that he would not seek re-election, but would remain active in private life. Since leaving office, he has been named vice chairman of J.P. Morgan & Co.'s International Council and is serving as a senior adviser to the firm, focusing on international issues, including economic policy, savings and investment issues, and challenges affecting emerging nations.
