Judith Granese, a Latin teacher at Valley High, spruced up her classroom with a faux protico of 2,000-year-old Doric columns.

Valley program a romantic affair

Under Julius Caesar's imperial gaze, Judith Granese sits in her classroom amid a faux portico of 2,000-year-old Doric columns, marble friezes, gladiators and Greek and Roman divinity.
Granese, Valley High's Latin language instructor, lives and breathes ancient Rome. A love affair that began in high school was stoked by books, film and most recently a nine-day summer study trip to Italy.
In 1992, Granese's infatuation with Rome led her to champion Latin curriculum at Valley.
In operation now for five years, the course is Nevada's only Latin class in a public school and has become an integral part of the Clark County School District's Foreign Language Curriculum and the school's International Baccalaureate Program, a 19-year-old program certifying juniors and seniors to study at universities around the world.

Participants in the junior volunteers program - for high school and college participants - also reap rewards other than character building.
