Becker skaters win title
View
Becker Middle School's in-line hockey team won the Las Vegas City Championship March 4 with a 7-3 victory over Sawyer Middle School at the Crystal Palace Sports Complex.
The first-year team, which was formed last October, overcame its low player turnout by staying near the top of the standings throughout the regular season.
When tryouts were first organized, only two players showed up the first night. Eventually the Bighorns grew to seven players, while most teams carried about 14 players on their rosters.
Although several of the players were stricken with the flu midway through the season, Becker finished in second place in the six-team varsity division with a 7-3 record.
Northside Nathan's hosted the team's celebration, which included the presentation of individual trophies and a championship banner that will hang at Crystal Palace.
The Bighorns, which are comprised mostly of underclassmen even though they participate in the eighth-grade varsity division, now have their sights set on the spring season.
