Donations keep Goodwill running

As with all charities, Goodwill of Southern Nevada survives only because the Las Vegas community supports it in various ways.
Steve Chartrand, president and CEO of Goodwill of Southern Nevada, said community involvement is crucial to making the Goodwill training program work.
"There are so many different ways people can help out," Chartrand said. "We understand there are many other charities that deserve the communities involvement. What we're asking is if you decide to donate to Goodwill there are many ways you can help."
Chartrand said many times people are uncomfortable with just giving monetary donations. Many times the donor is unsettled because they cannot see the result of their donations. Although Goodwill does accept monetary donations, Chartrand said there are other ways to see your charity go to work.
"As most of the community knows we accept donations of all kinds," Chartrand said. "We want people to be involved and, whether it's time or money, we are always willing to accept the help."
Goodwill lists 10 things the Northwest community can do to ensure the success of Goodwill and disabled employees.
-- Hire Goodwill graduates: The professional placement staff at Goodwill will find the right person and provide support during the initial period of employment.
-- Sponsor a work training position: Allow a Goodwill trainee to work at your place of business while supervised by and paid for by Goodwill.
-- Sponsor an attended donation center: Turn a few parking spaces into a convenient way for people to donate "gently used" items to Goodwill. Goodwill will cover all costs.
-- Sponsor a donated goods drive: Allow Goodwill to collect donated items during a special time-limited drive at your place of business.
-- Clean out your closets: Donate your own "gently used" items and get others to do the same.
-- Serve on a committee: Volunteer your time and expertise to Goodwill.
-- Sponsor a Goodwill retail store and training center: Donate money to create a gift to the community.
-- Shop at Goodwill retail stores: The stores are clean and the items are of the highest quality.
-- Donate real property: Enable Goodwill to strengthen its services to the community.
-- Donate "in kind" items: Goodwill can also accept donations of trucks, cars, computers and other items.
