The Las Vegas Legends senior softball team won the 50-and-over division at the LV Senior World Invitational at Lorenzi Park on Nov. 6-8.
This was the second consecutive year the Legends won the tournament. Teams from all over the United States and Canada participated in the event.
Legends defeated Al Estes from Clearwater, Fla., 29-25 in the semi-finals and won the title with a victory over Robbies of Portland, Ore., 32-21.
Hard-hitting Gary Pro put on a show mashing eight home runs in the Legends' last two games. Pitcher Howie Marstellar upheld his reputation as one of Las Vegas' top moundsmen, frustrating opposing hitters and fielding everything in sight.
The Legends also got strong performances from Wendel Taguchi, Jon Renwick, Rick Denton, Glen Myers, Bob Morris, Dave Barnes, Terry Bredeau, Steven Imlay, Don Coultas, Larry Mosser, Hank Cluess, Jerry Gale, Jack Taylor, Dodd Martin and Pete White. Coaches included Jim Nelson, George Caloia and Tony Lato.
All senior players 49-and-above are invited to play games every Saturday at Lorenzi Park from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Those interested can call Fred Keck at 877-0522.
DIAMOND NOTES --Hardcore won the ASA tournament on Nov. 14 at Shadow Rock. Hardcore edged out a talented Road Runner ballclub in the finals.
MVP Phillip Burnett hit better than .800 and threw out the tying run at the plate to end the championship game. All-tourneys to Hardcore's Poo Poopah, Billy Wilson, Nathan Slaman and Chris Young.
Road Runner selected Chris Raney as its MVP and all-tourneys went to Todd Kissel, Bo Brewer, Mike Quinto, Steve Williams and Mike Nowicki.
Third-place finisher Max Riggs, which lost two tough games in which it had the lead in the last inning, placed Raoul Machin, Cory Gehlken and Jim Laughlin on the all-tourney squad.
Sweet Zone, Time Inn, BW Landscape and Murderers Row all had strong tourneys.
n Auto Magic won the Jacket Tournament on Nov. 7, defeating Red Sox 14-10 in the finals.
MVP went to Mark Mencher and all-tourneys to Mike Carrasco, Pedro Gonzalez, Dominique Jenkins and Cory Parsons. Red Sox MVP went to Jim Dirk and all-tourneys went to Bobby Keys, Ira Ross and Chachi Bellagursal.
Hardcore took third place and added James Agee, Mike Armstrong, Lee Bartelf, Eric Bartolowits and Phil Burnett to the all-tourney team.
TOURNEY UPDATE -- The USSSA Bud Light Toys for Tots Tournament is slated for Nov. 28 and 29. Competition will be held in B, C and D divisions. Those interested can call 457-1348.
n The ASA Western World Series is set for Dec. 12 in Mesquite. World Series T-shirts will be given to all players and $5,000 in prizes will be given to the top teams. Those interested can call 260-7803.
