Youth football league
offers scholarships
The Nevada Youth Football League recently announced plans to award Las Vegas football players with $2,000 college scholarships for kicking the longest field goal.
The league will offer a Scholarship Kick For College competition that will allow Las Vegas middle and high school kids, ages 7-18, the chance to compete for six $2,000 college scholarships.
Participants will go through three qualification rounds beginning Nov. 15, until finalists from each of the six age divisions are selected. Finalists in each division will compete for the longest field goal during halftime in each of the league's Pro Bowl games to be held Dec. 12.
Scholarships and second-place prizes will be awarded immediately following the winning kicks.
All participants must register prior to the first qualification round, which is scheduled for Nov. 15. Registration requires proof of age, parental consent and a $20 registration fee.
The fee for current league players is $15.
Registrations will be taken at all weekly football games and at Saturn of West Sahara on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 5-8 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Youth track club
schedules picnic
The Public Safety Vegas Flyers Youth Track & Field Club will hold its season-opening picnic Nov. 14 at Lorenzi Park.
Youths, ages 6-17, are invited to join in the festivities.

Danny Gans tourney
set for Nov. 17
The man of many voices -- Danny Gans -- will host the Danny Gans Invitational Golf Tournament on Nov. 17 at the Rio Secco Golf Club.
The event, which begins with a complimentary clinic by Butch Harmon at 9:30 a.m., will benefit Boys Town of Nevada and the Southern Nevada Junior Golf Association.
The tournament is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and will be followed by an award ceremony and silent auction.

YMCA continues
water education
The YMCA reminds parents that water safety is a year-round issue.
The Bennett Family YMCA, located at 4141 Meadows Lane, offers learn-to-swim programs in indoor, heated pools for ages 6 months-adult. New sessions begin every few weeks.

Chuck Minker sets
personal safety class
The Chuck Minker Sports Complex, located at 275 N. Mojave Road, will offer a personal safety class from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 12.
The class is open to everyone, from teen-agers to adults. There will be no charge, but participants must be registered.
Sign-ups begin Nov. 1 and those interested can call 229-6563.

Former Las Vegas Thunder Manon Rheaume, the first woman to play in a National Hockey League game, has joined the Santa Fe Ice Arena to enhance the hockey school.
Rheaume will also promote a competitive tournament program for travelling teams. Weekly hockey clinics and hockey schools will be instructed by Rheaume with those instructors already on staff.

Palo Verde High will host a basketball camp Nov. 11-14 for boys and girls in grades 3-9.
Pre-enrollment deadline is Nov. 5 for a cost of $100, or $110 at the door when the camp begins.
Campers interested can mail their registration fee to: Palo Verde High School Basketball Camp, 333 Pavilion Center Dr., Las Vegas, Nev., 89134. All checks are to be made payable to: Pale Verde Basketball.
Participants will receive a camp T-shirt, player evaluation sheets, game times, entry into shooting contests and post-camp awards.
