Student essay has eye on leadership

      A Cimarron-Memorial High School student's ability to take charge has garnered her a top award.
      Tya Mathis was given the 1999 Betsy Herbst Leadership Award by the Nevada Student Council for her essay, "The Qualities of an Effective Leader." Because of her accomplishment, she was one of 200 students invited to attend a National Leadership Camp July 20-25 at Siena College in Albany, N.Y.

Longtime resident set to chair advisory group

      Chip Maxfield's a Northwest kind of guy and likes it that way.
      "I love the area. It's the best place in town to live," said Maxfield, appointed in January to chair the Lone Mountain Advisory Council, a five-member entity serving as a liaison between residents and the Clark County Commission.
