Once-risky business flourishes

      Just old enough to legally enter casinos, Michele Curran marched into the Friendly Club and asked them to take a chance on an unknown.
      It was 1977. The 21-year-old and her business partner had launched Unique Enterprises Inc. and were selling coin-wrap rolls -- the kind found littered around slot machines.

Squandron brightens up school

      Dressed in green fatigues, black boots and sunglasses, Sgt. Rod Smith and about 50 other Nellis airmen sweated in the noon-day heat to scrub, wash and paint Bridger Middle School.
      The North Las Vegas school, at 2505 N. Bruce St., is 36 years old and home to about 1,400 sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders.
