Police seek volunteers to assist tourists

The Metropolitan Police Department has begun recruiting for civilian volunteers to serve as members of the new Visitor Information, Visitor Assistance Patrol.
The patrol will be available to answer tourists' questions and assist in safety and crime issues. The patrol will be a detail under the department's existing Metro Volunteer Program.
The patrol is seeking individuals with good communication skills who would like to serve as police ambassadors to our community's 32 million-plus annual visitors. Candidates must be willing to walk a minimum of one 4-hour shift a week.
All applicants will undergo background checks.
The patrol is expected to hit the streets Labor Day weekend (Sept. 3-6), with three initial stations: McCarran International Airport, along the Las Vegas Strip, and on the Fremont Street Experience. The VIVA Patrol will be available to the public from 2 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday-Monday initially.
