Dreams come true during show

      The stage at the Summerlin Performing Arts Center became a backdrop of Chinese history on June 20, when Shirley Chen and Dancers held their first showcase in Las Vegas, "Dancing in June." It was also a dream come true for Chen, the group's artistic director.
      The show featured 16 folk dances, including the "Drum Dance of Celebration," which introduced drums used to celebrate peace; "The Coin Stick Dance," often performed on the Chinese New Year; and "The Beautiful Peacock," which is considered by the Tai people as the symbol of prosperity, good fortune and happiness. Colorful, authentic costumes depicted the different provinces of China.

Valley fired up for holiday

      It's America's 223rd birthday and Southern Nevada residents are invited to birthday bashes across the valley. Instead of watching candles burn atop a birthday cake, fireworks will dance across the evening sky.
      And while there will be no gifts accepted, there will be plenty of festivities to attend.
