Editor scoops up journalism honors

      Lauren Berrigan barely had time to make it back to her seat at the 1999 Las Vegas Review-Journal High School Journalism Awards ceremony before being called back to the podium -- again and again and again.
      The Green Valley High School senior, who is editor of the "InvestiGator," captured awards in seven of 17 categories, in addition to being named her school paper's Most Valuable Staffer.

Middle school namesake gets birthday celebration

      Helen Cannon thought she was going to a school concert, but instead ended up at her own 83rd birthday party.
      As she walked down the stairs of Cannon Middle School's gym and took her seat alongside daughter Alice and 12-year-old twin granddaughters Josephine and Sara Kennedy, she looked up over her silver-framed glasses in astonishment as the band broke out into "Happy Birthday."
