In what is bound to be a Memorial Day tradition, the Nevada Stage Company will bring Shakespeare to Summerlin for the second straight year.
The theatrical troupe, comprised of local talent, will present its second Shakespearean production: "Taming of the Shrew," at The Hills Park Thursday through Sunday.
Shakespeare's account of the battle between the sexes is often considered the playwrights best comedy, and Nevada Stage Company's performance will feature an unusual opening scene of swing music and dance of the 1940s before shifting directly into classic Shakespearean Renaissance to incorporate traditional Elizabethan staging.
"Last years production of `Midsummer Nights Dream' drew thousands to Hills Park," said Donna Lowre, artistic director of Nevada Stage Company. " `Taming of the Shrew' is one of Shakespeare's most popular comedies and through it we hope were able to expose even more people to Shakespeare as well as the talents of our many company members."
Nevada Stage Company is a nonprofit, professional theater comprised of 30 actors and actresses who now reside in Las Vegas.
"Members of Nevada Stage Company have impressive backgrounds, which include stage appearances in both New York City and Los Angeles, as well as performances in a number of television shows and made-for-TV movies," Lowre said. "Our goal, as it was when we began this troupe, is to enhance the Las Vegas theater community with a top-quality company and to provide seasoned local actors with a venue to showcase and share their talents."
The four-day run of "Taming of the Shrew" is sponsored by the city of Las Vegas, The Howard Hughes Corp., The Resort at Summerlin, AT&T, Del Web Anthem and KMZQ-FM (100.5).
Each evening, gates will open at 5 p.m., the green show will begin at 6 p.m. with Shakespeare beginning at 7 p.m. A special matinee for local students will be given at 10 a.m. Friday.
General admission tickets are $10 and are available at Borders Books, located at Lake Mead and Rainbow, at all TicketMaster outlets, the Charleston Heights Community Center or at the box office at Hills Park starting at 5 p.m. on show nights.
