Despite season-low fourth and 14th place finishes in their last two races, the three straight victories in Class 1-2/1,600 they started with this season have kept San Diego's Vic Bruckmann and Jason Hatz as No. 1 in their class and the overall point standings through five rounds of the six-race 1999 Laughlin SCORE Desert Series.
Closing the gap in the hunt for the overall championship are three Southern Nevada racers -- Troy Herbst of Las Vegas, Bekki Freeman of Henderson, and Las Vegas' Danny Anderson.
Keeping the heat on the tandem is Herbst, who leads the unlimited Class 1 after two straight wins. Freeman is second in Class 1-2/1,600 and third overall. Anderson, who has taken over the Class 10 lead after his second consecutive victory, is fourth overall.
Bruckmann/Hatz have 288 points while Herbst has 279 points, five more than Freeman. Anderson is fourth overall with 270 points in America's foremost desert racing series.
SCORE desert racers are preparing now for the season-ending 32nd Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, to be held Nov. 5 and 6, in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, 65 miles south of San Diego.
Herbst, the youngest of the three racing Herbst brothers, has won the unlimited Class 1 the last two years including last year's SCORE overall point championship. He was won his class and the overall at the last two races -- SCORE Fireworks 250 (July 17) and the SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 (Sept. 11).
Freeman drives solo and is second in Class 1-2/1,600 and third in overall points after winning the Class 1-2/1,600 season title last year as a SCORE rookie.
Anderson, who was helped with the driving duties the first three races of the year by Las Vegas' Rob MacCachren, has won the last two races in Class 10 while driving solo. His SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 win moved him to the top of Class 10 and fourth in overall points.
Las Vegas brothers Ed and Tim Herbst, Troy Herbst's older brothers, continue to lead the featured Trophy-Truck division with three wins in five starts and 229.
Las Vegas' Brian Collins leads Class 8.
