      It's late afternoon, and as the sun's last glow caresses Black Mountain, Patricia Riley takes down the American flag from the flagpole in front of Hillcrest Academy.
      The new private school, which houses 25 preschool-aged children, opened Sept. 27 at 1051 Sandy Ridge Ave. The school, which will ultimately be a five-acre campus that will educate preschool-to-fifth-grade pupils, was to open Aug. 23, but Riley, the school's administrator, said construction was delayed due to July flooding.

Malls make for safest activities

      For children, the Halloween objective is clear: candy, candy and more candy.
      The quest for treats doesn't have to stop or start at the front doorstep of the next-door neighbor. That quest can be accomplished at selected areas around town where costumed children will turn area malls into meccas for trick-or-treating.
