City cultivates free classes

      Thanks to a new series of gardening classes, green thumbs could soon be popping up all over Henderson.
      The city's Gardening Workshops program offers residents free instruction -- as well as a question-and-answer session -- with a number of master gardeners certified by UNR. The courses are sponsored by the Henderson Parks and Recreation Department and take place at the Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway Road.

Shake-up at top of the cops

      More changes are in store for the Henderson Police Department.
      Following the Aug. 25 resignation of police chief Tommy Burns, city manager Phil Speight announced that Capt. Michael Mayberry has been named Henderson's acting police chief. A 21-year Henderson police veteran and 1995 graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va., Mayberry began his new duties this month.
