Chamber offers
leadership program
The Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce is accepting enrollment applications for the Oct. 10 and 17 sessions of Focus Las Vegas, a leadership program designed to introduce new executives to the social, political and business systems of the Las Vegas community.
The two-day leadership program offers participants an overview of the organizations and a chance to meet people in the business community. The program costs $600 for Chamber members and $750 for non-members.
Applications are available at the Chamber's offices, 3720 Howard Hughes Parkway. The deadline for submitting applications for the program is Sept.. 11 at 5 p.m. Those interested can call 735-1261 or send an e-mail to ssheridan@lvchamber.com.
Clothing store
set to open Sept. 1
The world's largest tie will be cut Sept. 1 to mark the grand opening of Rochester Big & Tall Clothing in the Boulevard Mall.
The 7,000-square-foot store will the first in Nevada and the 22nd store in the world.
The store, based in San Francisco, offers a variety of clothing lines made for big or tall men. Rochester customers are usually at least 6 feet tall and weigh 200 pounds or more. Clothing can also be custom made.
Clothes for Kids
booths at malls
"Clothes For Kids" booths will be set up at the Boulevard and Meadows malls this weekend by the Salvation Army to encourage people to buy back-to-school clothing for children in need.
Individual tags will be on display listing the clothing needs and sizes for each child in the program. Area residents are encouraged to "adopt" a child to buy clothes for the new school year.
Volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and to keep records of who adopts each child.
"Our Family Service took the applications from needy families and will be distributing the clothes to each family in time for the opening of school," said Lt. Colonel Jim Sullivan.
The booths will be open from Friday through Sunday. The Salvation Army can be reached at 870-4430.
Project 21 awards
25 scholarships
Twenty-five Nevada students each received $1,000 scholarships from Project 21 in recognition of their educational posters, articles and videos that addressed the issue of underage gambling.
Project 21, sponsored by Harrah's Entertainment, Primadonna Resorts Inc., Hotel San Remo of Las Vegas, Ameristar Casinos Harveys Casino Resorts, New York-New York Hotel and Casino and International Gaming Technology, aims to teach employees, kids, parents and teachers about the consequences of underage gambling.
Beginning next year, the Nevada Council on Problem Gambling will assume administration of Project 21.
Volunteers needed
to make pillows
Volunteers are needed to make comfort pillows during National Comfort Day Sept. 15, for Las Vegas hospice and hospital patients.
The program, part of a Weekend of Caring, Sept. 15-17, is organized by the Sewing Room, 3768 E. Flamingo Road.
A comfort pillow is a square, rectangular or heart-shaped cushion given to hospice and hospital patients for comfort and support.
The Sewing Room is setting up an assembly line for making the pillows and needs volunteers. The goal is 500 pillows.

Clothing drive
to aid Child Haven
Community One Federal Credit Union is having a clothing drive throughout this month to benefit Child Haven. Donations are being accepted at all three Community One locations: 3100 W. Sahara Ave., Suite 115; 3230 E. Flamingo Road, Suite 6; and 2699 N. Tenaya Way.
Child Haven is a Division of the Clark County Department of Family and Youth Services which provides temporary care and treatment for abused, neglected and abandoned children through the age of 18.

Girl Scouts need
Cambell labels
Girl Scouts of Frontier Council has been making progress toward its goal to collect 1.3 million labels for Cambell's "Labels for Education" drive. Since the scouts started their drive in December 1999, they have collected approximately 8,000 labels with the help of volunteers and friends.
The goal is to acquire a 15-passenger van for program activities through the Labels for Education program. Hospice offers
support group
Family Home Hospice is offering a free bereavement support group for children ages 6-12 who are dealing with the death of a loved one.
The sessions, which are offered twice monthly throughout the year, are from 6 to 7 p.m. at 1701 W. Charleston Blvd.

Voter registration
offered at hospital
Voter Registration Day is being offered at Valley Hospital Medical Center, 620 Shadow Lane, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday. Residents are encouraged to register to vote for the Nov. 7 general election. Those wishing to register should bring photo identification.

County issues
health-care alert
Clark County is currently experiencing what is known as a "divert" situation. This occurs when hospitals face a shortage of critical care and emergency room beds in response to ambulance services experiencing a higher volume of calls.
In response to this situation the Clark County Health District is urging residents to use the appropriate medical facilities for their illnesses and injuries and to reserve the use of emergency services for life-threatening medical situations.
CCSN registration
under way for fall
Registration is under way for fall classes at the Community College of Southern Nevada. More than 3,000 course selections are offered for the fall semester, which starts Sept. 5 with late registration continuing through Sept. 11.
In addition to traditional 16-week semester courses, CCSN offers concentrated weekend-only courses and short courses lasting four and seven weeks to fit the work and lifestyles of area residents and employers.
