The Pahrump Valley Squares will have the first of its weekly beginner's square dancing at 7 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Manse Elementary School multipurpose room, 1020 E. Wilson Road.

     Council presents
     play at vineyards
     
     
Riverboat Revenge, a melodrama, will be presented at the Pahrump Valley Vineyards at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 8-9.
      The play is produced by the Pahrump Valley Performing Arts Council. Tickets ate $7 for adults and $4 for children under 12.
     
     Volunteers needed
     for festival parade
     
     
Volunteers are needed for the Pahrump Valley Harvest Festival parade Sept. 16. Anyone who wants to volunteer may call the Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce at 727-5800 or Art Jones at 727-8535.
      The harvest festival will again be hosting the Diamond G Rodeo Co., which will put on a Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association event. The rodeo starts at 7 p.m. Sept. 15-16 and 4 p.m. Sept. 17. Rodeo performer "One Arm Bandit and Company" will return this year.
      Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 13. Souvenir T-shirts for the rodeo are now on sale.

     Nursing facility
     receives honor
     
     
Mountain Valley Health and Rehabilitation in Pahrump was one of four skilled nursing facilities in Southern Nevada to receive a notice of substantial compliance with regulations by the Bureau of Licensure and Certification of Health Facilities in a state report released this month.
      Mountain Valley took its first patient Nov. 19 and received its Medicare/Medicaid certification Feb. 15.
      "We've been in substantial compliance since we've opened," said Joe Campbell, secretary-treasurer of H&C Healthcare Management Inc. operators of Mountain Valley. "There was a certification survey done by the State of Nevada, and we were real pleased with the outcome."
     
     Public to hear
     from applicants
     
     
The public is invited to hear presentations by the four applicants for the position of UNR Cooperative Extension Agent at 3 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Wednesday and 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday in the Nye County School District office at 1020 E. Wilson Road.

     to meet Saturday
     
     
The first Friends of the Library meeting after the summer break is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday at the Nye County School District Office at 1020 E. Wilson Road.
      The guest speaker will be Kathy Pallares, Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce executive director. Refreshments will be served.
     
     Gardner training
     program scheduled
     
     
The UNR Cooperative Extension Office master gardener training program will begin at 8 a.m. Sept. 13 in the UNR Cooperative Extension Office, 1651 E. Calvada Blvd.
      The program teaches volunteers how to garden in the desert. Those who become certified master gardener volunteers then share their knowledge about water-efficient gardening and horticulture with others.
      Applicants are available at the extension office from 8 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday. Those interested can call 727-5532.
      A Pahrump Master Gardener Society Plant Sale is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 10 at Oranda's Water Gardens, 871 Buol Lane. Proceeds from trees, shrubs, drought-tolerant and native plants that are sold will benefit the Pahrump Demonstration Garden.
     
     Deadline nears for
     chamber magazine
     
     
Applications for Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce members to place ads in next year's chamber magazine are available at the chamber office until Sept. 15.
      The magazine, which will be distributed beginning Jan. 1, is the chamber's best marketing tool and is sent in response to each inquiry the chamber receives. This year, the magazine will be hand-delivered, so copies will reach every home and business in Pahrump.
      Articles from service clubs and organizations may be submitted to the chamber's magazine committee in advance of the deadline.

     Youths taught
     how to plan career
     
     
The Nye County School District and the School to Careers Partnership Office has announced a new program that provides career skill attainment courses with work experience for youths ages 14 to 21 in Nye and Esmeralda counties.
      The new "Bridge the Gap" program is targeted toward students who are deficient in basic literacy skills, school dropouts, homeless, runaways, foster children, pregnant or parenting, or disabled.

     Exchange program
     needs host parents
     
     
Hosts are being sought in the Pahrump area for foreign exchange students as part of the AYUSA or Academic Year USA program.
      Organizers say there is still a good selection of students from countries such as The Netherlands, Japan, Germany, Brazil and Thailand. Hosts can be single persons and grandparents.
      Those interested in being hosting a student can call Pam Gatling at 751-5447.
     Box top drive
     aids education
     
     
Residents are being encouraged to send in their box tops from various products to Manse Elementary School as a fund-raiser to help buy supplies for the accelerated math and accelerated reading programs. The General Mills Box Tops for Education program will donate 10 cents to the school for each box top collected from the following products: General Mills Lucky Charms, Cheerios, Fruit by the Foot and Fruit Gushers cereals, Betty Crocker fruit snacks and Yoplait yogurt.
      A box top logo will denote if the product is eligible for the refund. The school address is 1020 E. Wilson Road, Pahrump, NV 89048.

The Pahrump Valley Democratic Club will sponsor a candidate's night at 7 p.m. today in the Pahrump Community Center, 150 N. Highway 160.
      All candidates for public office have been invited.
