City wins award for trail systemBy EMMILY N. BRISTOL
By EMMILY N. BRISTOL VIEW STAFF WRITER The bike and trail system in Henderson received the Golden Spoke award Dec. 18 from the Regional Transportation Commission at the Horizon Awards ceremony. The award is given to businesses, organizations and individuals who have contributed to innovative projects that promote mobility in Southern Nevada. "The city has a good reputation of getting bike trails," said long-range planner Michael Tassi, who accepted the award for the city. "We have a commitment to providing trails in our city." All public services in Clark County were eligible for the new award. Tassi said his department plans to continue with projects for 87 more miles of trails within Henderson, most of which are constructed by private developers. Henderson now has 25 miles of completed trails. Including paths, lanes and routes, the city has 230 completed miles of bike facilities. "We get a lot of cooperation with developers," Tassi said. An example of private developers building public pathways is the Amargosa Trail built through the Green Valley Ranch community. The city actively cooperates with the RTC and Southern Nevada Regional Trails Partnership to create more pathways in the city. Tassi said Henderson has a commitment to encourage residents to use alternate transportation when possible, such as bikes and public transportation. "It helps our air quality," he said While the city of Henderson won the Golden Spoke for the public sector, another Golden Spoke was given to the Las Vegas Valley Bicycle Club for its work in the private sector. |
