Youth councils
benefit teen-agers
Teens who are involved with their communities and who spend time discussing topics that are important to them are less likely to get into trouble, according to the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services.
In an effort to give local teens what they need to keep on track, the department formed youth councils several years ago at community centers and schools through the Las Vegas Valley. There are now 16 youth councils serving more than 200 teens in Clark County, said Dale Barbeau, recreation field supervisor for the department.
The youth council members get together at least once a week for discussions and to plan community activities as well as fun activities for themselves. Barbeau said a large community clean-up effort is in the works that would include members of all youth councils.
The youth councils are hosting a Valentine's Day dance Friday at Garside Junior High from 7 to 9:30 p.m. for teens 12 to 15 years old. The dance is a lock in, meaning once teens enter the activity they must stay until the end.
Teens interested in youth council can call the Department of Leisure Services at 229-6297.
