      Surgery is a frightening prospect for anyone, but for children the thought of a hospital stay could be a psychological nightmare, with visions of doctors causing never-ending pain.
      That's why Debbie Chapman's job is so important to her. The child-life specialist knows the way a child envisions surgery and everything involved with it -- including doctors, nurses and hospitals -- can be the difference in that child's recovery.

Schools help fight crowding

      Authorities with the Clark County School District say the construction of six new schools should help alleviate some of the overwhelming demand for public education in the county.
      The four elementary schools and two middle schools are scheduled for completion in August. The four new elementary schools are scattered throughout the valley and include Martinez, 350 E. Judson Ave. in North Las Vegas; Moore, 451 N. Lamb Blvd., in northeast Las Vegas; Hal Smith near Desert Inn Road and Nellis Boulevard; and Ober, at 3035 Desert Marigold Lane in southwest Las Vegas.
