Buffalo Promotions has scheduled its first professional wrestling card, Buffalo Wrestling Federation's Millennium Madness, for 7 p.m. Saturday at Mahoney's Silver Nugget.
Actually, the Buffalo Wrestling Federation has been holding wrestling cards around the Las Vegas Valley for nearly a year, but this is the first time Jim Barrier's new Buffalo Promotions has put on the card.
"It took a little while to go through the state to get a promoter's license," said Barrier, owner of the BWF and a wrestling school as well. "I can now promote wrestling here and anywhere else in the state. There's an Indian reservation down by Laughlin I'm interested in working with."
Prior to getting licensed as a promoter, Barrier had to use other promoters to schedule his cards.
The first wrestling card scheduled by Buffalo Promotions has a couple of other firsts working for it as well.
It will be the first to feature former World Wrestling Federation Intercontinental Champion Honkytonk Man and also former WWF participant Doink the Clown. It will also feature the BWF's first women's match and a 22-man Battle Royal.
"I realize in wrestling, a lot of people associate with the names they see on TV," Barrier said. "I'm trying to get some drawing power to see if we can get some more people in. If we can get people in, we know they'll come back."
Honkytonk Man, who held the WWF Intercontinental title for 14 months, will wrestle for the BWF World Heavyweight Championship against "Superstar" Mike Lane and his band of Misfits.
"I've known Honkytonk for a while," Barrier said. "I felt he'd be good. You know he'll come out with his guitar and try to work the audience. I gave him a title shot right off the bat because he has the longest run ever as Intercontinental Champion."
Doink the Clown will wrestle former BWF heavyweight champion Rush.
The first women's match will feature Lexy Fith and Brandy Wine, two competitors from the Deep South who have been rivals for quite a while.
"They have a dispute and we're going to settle it right here in Las Vegas," Barrier said, adding that this will be a more realistic women's match than the ones usually put on in the WWF or World Championship Wrestling. "These girls are from an independent circuit. Most of the stuff on TV these days is quite different. Heck, most of them don't even wrestle."
Another bout will feature Johnny "Psycho" Pain, who will be managed by KLUC-FM (98.5) morning personality Danger Boy from the Morning Zoo program. His opponent will be first-time wrestler Dr. Steve Stonebreaker. Stonebreaker is listed at 6 foot 4 inches and 280 pounds and is a member of the Buffalo Wrestling School.
Also, the Power Twins will again wrestle the Power Co.
"This will be the grand finale," Barrier said. "It will be a no-holds-barred battle for the supremacy of the twins."
Another title up for grabs is the cruiserweight championship currently held by The Little Show. Barrier said The Little Show won the title in the gym and because he's only 17 years old, he isn't eligible to defend his title in an event. Barrier said The Little Show will pick one participant to wrestle for the title and he'd pick the other.
"He's trying to put on the Small World Order," Barrier said. "He claims small people need a chance and he's trying to take over the Buffalo Wrestling Federation. I'm trying to make sure that doesn't happen."
One wrestler who won't compete is the popular Missionary, who hasn't recovered from an injury during the last show. However, Barrier said his presence will be felt.
"Some of his guys are coming out to do a collection for him," Barrier said. "He's still rehabbing the injury and recuperating well. He'll be ready to come back for the next show."
Tickets for the show cost $12 and $25 and can be purchased at the door or in advance at Buffalo Jim Auto and Marine Electric, 2478 Industrial Road, and at Rio Tans locations around the valley. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
