Citizens Area Transit, a service of the Regional Transportation Commission of Clark County, has been selected for the Gold Award in the 2000 American Public Transit Association's (APTA) Bus Safety Award Competition. This year's honor marks the third straight year that the RTC and its contract service provider, ATC/Vancom Inc., have been selected as the nation's safest transit system.
The Gold Award is the highest award presented to the transit system with the best overall safety record and program during 1999. The award recognizes achievement in motor bus safety by transit agencies in the U.S. and Canada.
"Our first priority has always been safety," said RTC General Manager Jacob Snow. "And it is very rewarding to see our efforts pay off with this remarkable honor."
The Bus Safety Awards are presented in four competitive groups based on the number of passenger trips. This year the CAT Bus system was placed in the largest group with more than 30 million passenger trips. There were more than 100 bus transit systems competing for the awards including New York, Dallas and Chicago.
The award was presented May 10 in Houston at the APTA Bus and Paratransit Conference.
APTA has conducted Safety Award competitions since 1914. Although the number and types of awards have varied to correspond with changes in transit operations through the years, the purpose has always been to publicly acknowledge those transit systems having superior safety records and that have demonstrated excellence in their safety programs.
