Orchestra's act earns accolades

      It might seem odd, but musical artists such as Mozart, Mick Jagger and Method Man have something in common: They're all part of Christina Hekkert's compact disc collection.
      Hekkert, a 27-year-old music teacher and string orchestra leader at Von Tobel Middle School, recently took the school's orchestra to Valencia, Calif., where it took first place in the Music in the Park competition and had a chance to go to Six Flags Amusement Park.

Alliance praises women

      The Professional Black Women's Alliance took the time to honor some of its more prominent black and bold businesswomen for their accomplishments and commitment to bettering their community.
      The alliance had a small luncheon June 4 to honor the 25 women who were nominated for this year's Rose Awards, which are given to those individuals who have shown leadership in the community.
