      Mark Howard, president and CEO of MountainView Hospital, watched from across the street as last summer's 100-year flood filled the Gowan South Detention Basin.
      Teachers at the Children's World Center, which abuts the 54-acre basin, checked the windows every 15 minutes, and director Andrea Swayne periodically phoned Regional Flood Control District hydrologist Tim Sutko for real-time statistics.

Pupils extend a hand

      A handful of volunteers from Sunrise Senior Friends recently put their artistic talents to work helping art pupils at Katz Elementary School. But beyond the staples and glue, the two generations found a stronger bond -- friendship.
      The event was Join Hands Day, a new national community service day.
