      More than 1,300 American Express executives, in town for their annual March convention, took a day off from seminars and lectures to roll up their sleeves and plant 1,000 trees, assemble 11 picnic tables and benches and build a fence and an informational kiosk as part of an ongoing refurbishing of the Las Vegas Wetlands Park.
      The project covered about 50 acres of the 2,400-acre park at a cost of $150,000. American Express donated the funds in addition to the man-hours, said project spokeswoman Dale Rowe of the Clark County Parks and Recreation department.

Teachers rewarded for pupil's essay

      Sixth-grader Cassie Sweet put into words her appreciation of math teacher Teresa Thomson. For her efforts, the 11-year-old O'Callaghan Middle School pupil was rewarded with a roomful of furniture earlier this month.
      Sweet won the furniture, which was used to furnish the teachers' lounge, in the "Helping Kids Help Teachers" contest sponsored by Walker Furniture. Students had a chance to win free furnishings for their school's teachers' lounge by writing a one-page letter detailing what is special about their teacher.
