      More than 1,300 American Express executives, in town for their annual March convention, took a day off from seminars and lectures to roll up their sleeves and plant 1,000 trees, assemble 11 picnic tables and benches and build a fence and an informational kiosk as part of an ongoing refurbishing of the Las Vegas Wetlands Park.
      The project covered about 50 acres of the 2,400-acre park at a cost of $150,000. American Express donated the funds in addition to the man-hours, said project spokeswoman Dale Rowe of the Clark County Parks and Recreation department.

Conference offers students guidance

      Hundreds of students from the Clark County School District set their alarm clocks to get up before 7 a.m. on a recent Saturday to attend the fourth annual African-American Student Achievement Conference at UNLV.
      The approximately 600 high school students were treated to several high-profile speakers, including the creator of Kwanzaa, educational workshops on college and careers, lunch and entertainment from the musical group IMX.
