County offering slew of summer activities

The Clark County Department of Parks and Recreation is offering various events throughout the valley in the coming months.
Activities include summer day camps for youths; overnight mountain camps; recreational and cultural classes; aquatics programs for all ages; sports and fitness activities; and concerts and special events. Mail-in registration begins Friday for summer classes and Monday for summer day camps.
Summer Fun day camp for ages 6-12 begins June 5 at Paradise, Parkdale, Whitney, Sunrise, and Helen Meyer community centers. Hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Cost is $55 per week or $12 per day. Winchester Center (455-7340) sponsors an Arts & Learning Summer Camp for ages 6-12, June 5-Aug. 18 from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Cost is $60 per week.
Mail-in registration for the three summer class sessions will begin Friday. Walk-in registration begins May 22. Summer class session dates are June 5-July 1; July 25-29; and July 31-Aug. 26. Classes are available in the areas of arts and crafts, dance for children and adults, child development, gymnastics, exercise and fitness, martial arts, hobbies, languages, sports and music.

Harrison Drive, 455-7513; Sunrise Community Center, 2240 Linn Lane, 455-7600; Sunset Park, 2601 E. Sunset Road, 455-8200; Von Tobel Community Center, 3610 E. Carey Avenue, 455-7699; Walnut Cecile Community Center, 3880 Cecile Ave., 455-8402; Whitney Community Center, 5700 Missouri Ave., 455-7573; Whitney Senior Center, 5712 Missouri Ave., 455-7576; West Flamingo Senior Center, 6255 W. Flamingo Road, 455-7742; and Winchester Community Center, 3130 S. McLeod St., 455-7340.
Other activities include:
n Sports Camps will be offered at Desert Breeze Center (455-8334) for ages 7-14 for $85 per week. These camps highlight baseball, soccer, basketball, and FUNdamentals sports skills.
n Three overnight mountain camps are planned at Clark County's Camp Lee Canyon in Mt. Charleston. The Lee Canyon Arts Camp is scheduled for July 9-15 for ages 8-12; Omnicamp: An Adventure in Science for ages 8-12 is scheduled for July 16-22; and, On the Edge Teen Camp, for ages 13-15, is slated for July 23-29. Costs range from $250 to $300, which includes all meals, instruction, camp director and assistant director, on-site registered nurse and lodging. Also, two overnight Therapeutic recreation camps at Camp Lee Canyon will be held in August for individuals with mental disabilities. Cost for the Therapeutic camps is $300.
n Swimming lessons for ages 3 and up, swim team, recreational swim time, synchronized swimming, senior open swim, water sports, junior life guarding and more will be offered at one or all of the seven urban county pools. Those interested can call 455-8200.
n Special events, concerts and exhibits planned this summer include: the Jazz in the Park Concert series at the Government Center Amphitheater; the Young People's Summer Concert Series at Winchester Center for ages 3 and up; Red, White and Boom: A Fourth of July Celebration; and the Whitney Spring eXtreme Thing. There are 26 family-oriented special events and activities planned through August.
