GALLERY `Smoking' show set for display Markman Gallery has scheduled the "Smoking" art show opening featuring the Cigar Art of Rudy Mazur at 7 p.m. Friday at Gustav Mauler's Cigar Lounge in the Regent Las Vegas. Mazur is known for the mouth and tongue logo he created for the Rolling Stone's in the 1970s, and is also credited with creating more than 60 album covers and logos for Billy Joel, Elton John, Van Morrison and B.B. King, among others. Now a Las Vegas resident, Mazur recently created a poster of Blu, the Centennial High School mascot. In addition to the art, the event will feature cigars, prizes, a silent auction and entertainment. The exhibit is open to the public at no charge. Markman Gallery is open from 2 to 10 p.m. daily. HONORS Local student medals at games David Day, a sixth-grader at Johnson Middle School, recently won the bronze medal in the 10- and 11-year old male division of the basketball competition of the National Youth Games in Honolulu. Day competed with 2,500 locals to advance to the sectional competition in Las Vegas, where he won first place in basketball and earned one of the top scores in the West Region. The National Youth Games is a free grassroots youth participation program for kids ages 8 to 13 to participate in any of four athletic events. Approximately 150,000 youths participated this year. OPENING Petland opens new store Petland, a nationally established pet store, was scheduled to open Nov. 11 in the Boca Park Marketplace at Charleston and Rampart boulevards. The 4,200-square-foot Petland store carries a wide range of pet supplies and pets, and is operated locally by the Logan family. Nationally, stores offer programs such as Adopt-A-Pet, Pet Therapy and Pets for a Lifetime. Founded in 1967 in Ohio, Petland is dedicated to matching the right pet with the right customer, and enhancing knowledge about pets. For more information, call 949-7387. |
