BASKETBALL

Holiday Hoops Clinic

stresses fundamentals

A free basketball clinic will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, at the Warren-Walker Upper School in Henderson, located at 1165 Sandy Ridge Ave. The clinic is open to boys and girls ages 6 to 16. Players must bring their own shoes, socks and shorts.

Chad Groth, a former coach and manager of basketball operations for the Harlem Globetrotters, will host the Holiday Hoops Clinic, which will focus on the fundamentals of defense, shooting and rebounding. Groth will stress the importance of good sportsmanship and team role-playing while teaching players how to apply these values in their daily activities.

Former UNLV basketball player Warren Rosegreen was originally scheduled to run the clinic, but is now unable to appear. Rosegreen is expected to join the Harlem Globetrotters as a player.

Bandits tab Robinson

The Las Vegas Bandits recently named Sam Robinson as an assistant coach. Robinson rounds out the Bandits' coaching staff, which includes assistant coach/director of player personnel Barry Hecker, assistant coach Robert Smith, and head coach Lionel Hollins.

Robinson enjoyed a stellar playing career in the high school, college and professional ranks. After starring for Long Beach State, Robinson was drafted by both the National Basketball Association and the American Basketball Association in 1970.

The Bandits will open their second International Basketball League season on the road Dec. 1, with their home opener slated for Dec. 14 at the Thomas and Mack Center. Season tickets are on sale now. Those interested can call 938-3838.

GOLF

Celebrity tounament

set for December

The sixth-annual Fletcher Jones Lexus Celebrity Golf Classic will take place Dec. 13, at the Las Vegas National Golf Club. Former Major League Baseball player Mike Maddux will host the event, which will benefit the Southern Nevada Inner-City Youth Golf Association.

Past participants of the event include Andre Agassi, Greg Maddux, Bob May, Danny Gans, Marty Barrett and others. Spots are still available for the event, including chances to play with a celebrity.

The Southern Nevada Inner City Youth Golf Association is a scholarship and educational teaching athletic program geared towards inner-city kids, and provides them with opportunities to learn life skills through the game of golf. Honesty, integrity, good sportsmanship, individual leadership and dedication are cornerstones of the SNICYGA.

Golf competition

to benefit shelter

Safe Nest is hosting its second annual "Birdies for Safe Nest" benefit golf tournament, Dec. 11, at the Stallion Mountain Country Club. The entry fee for the four-person scramble is $150 per person and includes a continental breakfast, lunch, golf and prizes.

Prizes will be awarded for longest drive, closest to the pin and hole-in-one. The Findlay Automotive Group is providing a new Honda Civic for a hole in one.

Safe Nest operates the only 24-hour emergency shelters in Las Vegas and North Las Vegas with secret locations for the safety of battered women and children. Safe Nest also provides counseling, advocacy and other needed services for individuals experiencing domestic violence, including a domestic crisis hot line, 646-4981.

LAND SAILING

Clear sailing seen

for land competition

Competitors from across the United States will attempt a land sailing speed record in several different classes Friday through Tuesday on the Ivanpah dry lake bed, next to Primm at the state line.

Last year, Bob Dill of Vermont set a land-sailing speed record with a 116-mph run in his land yacht "Iron Duck." Spectators can attend the North American Land Sailing Association event by taking the road behind the Lotto store next to the Primm Outlet Mall.
