Fishing enthusiasts of all ages are invited to cast their line into Sunset Park Lake from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday during the "Take a Kid Fishing Derby."

Derby organizer Lyon Davis said the event is free and open to people of all ages. The event is sponsored by Clark County Parks and Recreation and Raley's Supermarkets and Drug Centers.

Event organizers plan to stock the lake with trout, and Davis said several prizes will be awarded, including gift certificates for pizza and miniature golf, fishing gear and Gameworks passes. Prizes will be given in five age categories.

Organizers plan to offer free bait to the first 5,000 fishing participants. Davis said they will also have volunteers on site to help bait hooks, untangle lines or demonstrate the perfect cast.

Each participant will be limited to a three-fish catch. Children under age 12 can fish without a licence, but participants 12 and older must have a Nevada state fishing licence with a trout tag. Fish and game officials will be on site to ensure compliance.

"Hopefully there will be enough fish for everyone," Davis said.

Davis is excited to lead his first fishing derby.

"It's going to be fun. Kids love it; parents love it; there's nothing like a good derby."

Advance event registration can be completed at any Raley's customer service desk. Same day registration will be available on the south side of the lake, 2601 E. Sunset Road.

Picnic parties are welcome, and Davis said hotdogs and soda will be sold at a food booth sponsored by Raley's.
