LECTURES Professors to speak as part of UNLV series Lectures in New England Humor and Iceland winters are scheduled to be presented this week at UNLV. English professor Robert Dodge plans to recreate the essence of the New England Yankee for a performance lecture Thursday. On Tuesday, Jeffrey Kottler, a professor at the University of New England in Armindale, Australia, is scheduled to present a slide-illustrated lecture on his experiences as a Fulbright Scholar in Iceland. Both lectures are set for 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History on the UNLV campus. Lectures are free and open to the public. HOLIDAY EVENTS Bethlehem exhibit to feature nativities Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from all over Las Vegas have combined efforts to host The Bethlehem Exhibit 2000: A Celebration of Christ. The event will include a display of nativity sets and other items related to the birth of Christ from all over the world. The display runs from Thursday through Saturday inside the LDS chapel on the corner of East Tropicana Boulevard and Burnham Avenue. To assist families with young children, organizers plan to offer a complimentary children's room where small children can play while older children and adults wander thorough displays of nativity scenes. The nativity display is scheduled to be open free to the public from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday and noon to 9 p.m. Saturday. Hospice presents annual candle lighting Nathan Adelson Hospice plans to sponsor its 13th annual "Light up a Life" memorial candle lighting ceremony Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Nathan Adelson Hospice, 4141 Swenson St. The non-denominational event is scheduled to feature inspirational music from local choirs and vocalists. The free event is open to the public. Donations to Nathan Adelson Hospice in the names of loved ones are welcome. Nathan Adelson Hospice, southern Nevada's only nonprofit hospice, provides care for patients diagnosed with terminal illnesses. Bishop Gorman presents classic play Bishop Gorman High School students plan to present "A Christmas Carol" today through Saturday. Performances staring Bishop Gorman student Kris Jordan as Scrooge are scheduled for 7:30 nightly at the Clark County Library Theater, 1401 E. Flamingo Road. Audience members who purchase a special ticket for tonight's show can receive select seating and come early to sample classic English Christmas fair. Director Jane Talley said English pastries, hot spiced cider, tea and coffee will be served beginning at 6 p.m. Opening night tickets with the early reception are $10. Tickets for the show are $6 for children and seniors and $8 for adults. Audience members are also invited to bring donations of clean used or new blankets, gloves, jackets, warm sweaters, hats, underwear, pants and toiletries to any performance. Donations will be collected at the door and taken to Mathew's Closet, a homeless outreach program sponsored by Bishop Gorman. Tickets for "A Christmas Carol" can be purchased at the high school business office, 1801 S. Maryland Parkway or at the library theater one hour before the play. BUSINESS Tech Tuesdays moves to Chicago Brewing Co. Port Cyber and Internet Business Alliance of Nevada have moved Tech Tuesday, its weekly series of business networking and social events for people interested in high-technology issues and industries, to the Chicago Brewing Co., 2201 S. Fort Apache Road at Sahara Avenue in the Village Square shopping center for the winter. Tech Tuesday runs from 5:30 to 8 p.m., every Tuesday, with free admission, food and first drink for those interested in the high-tech world. Santa to take photos with pets at mall The Boulevard Mall, in conjunction with Media Partners for Pets, invite the public to bring their leashed or carrier-contained pets to the mall Sunday through Tuesday for pictures with Santa. Veterinarians from Veterinary Centers of America will offer information on spaying and neutering, pet health-care and microchipping. A dog trainer will be available to answer queries on pet behavior problems and related pet services. The $5 sitting fee, donated to Media Partners for Pets, will help them continue their work rescuing, treating and finding homes for shelter animals. Sittings are from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday and 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. For more information call 307-1566. |
