Seniors pitch in to help peersBy GINGER MIKKELSENVIEW STAFF WRITER
The ladies club at Dorothy Kidd Senior mobile home park have been hard at work making Easter treats for local children and senior citizens. Club members started stitching up plastic canvas Easter baskets in January. In that short time they have constructed more than 100 baskets to distribute at Child Haven and at a nursing home in Henderson. They have also stitched up pocket-sized crosses to give to seniors along with a religious poem. "It's seniors helping seniors," said club member Mary Rose. "Usually children get a lot, but nursing homes are often forgotten," Irma McKillip said. Each little basket can take up to 30 minutes to make. Club member Simone Simpson said once the stitches are down most of the women can turn out a basket every 15 minutes. To complete the baskets, the women stuff each full of Easter grass, candy and top it off with a candy-filled egg. Mary Rose and her husband Bob plan to deliver the baskets tomorrow. Easter is only one big holiday for the club. At Christmas they crafted little trains out of Lifesavers candy rolls and made up lollipop snowmen. Members of the women's club at the senior park meet once a week to put together service projects and socialize. They also sponsor most of the park's social activities ranging from bingo nights and pot-luck dinners to parking lot craft sales. Their next public sale is set for November. "We couldn't call it a flea market because we have no fleas," teased club member Eleanor Desautel. For more information phone Mary Rose at 458-6828. |
