WRESTLING Local teen-ager wins national title T.J. Geick recently captured a national championship in Greco-Roman wrestling and placed third in freestyle wrestling at the U.S.A. Nationals in Fresno, Calif. Geick, a 14-year-old who attended Becker Middle School, won the Greco-Roman title at the Western Regionals in Pocotello, Idaho, to qualify for the national event, which featured wrestlers from more than 40 states.
MARTIAL ARTS 6-year-old captures gold medal in Kata Connor Lazenby recently won a gold medal at the National Karate Federation National Championships in Houston, Tex. Lazenby, a Las Vegas 6-year-old, captured a national title in Kata at the event, which featured more than 5,000 competitors. Lazenby trains at the Las Vegas School of Shotokan Karate, located on West Sahara Ave.
TENNIS Mixed doubles team wins divisional title A Las Vegas mixed doubles team recently won the 7.0 Division title at the USTA/Intermountain Sectional Championships at the Vail Racquet Club in Vail, Col. The win earned the squad a berth in the Western Regional Championships, which is scheduled for Nov. 15-18 in Phoenix, Ariz. The team features James Preus, Jill Chase, Mark Bowman, Teresa Bowman, Mark Mummey, Kim Mummey, Michael Springer, Kim Springer, Janice Arthur and Horace Graves.
BENEFIT Relay for Life to start Friday The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life is slated from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday, with the starting point at the Cheyenne Sports Complex. Relay For Life, a 12-hour relay to fight cancer, is the ACA's signature fund-raising event. Teams of 10 to 15 members will pitch tents for an overnight camp-out and games, prizes and a live performance by Tommy Rocker will also be featured. SOFTBALL Bollettino tourney scheduled for Nov. 3 The second annual Thom Bollettino Softball Classic is slated for Nov. 3 at the Arroyo Grande Sports Complex. The entry fee of $150 per team includes awards, a raffle, barbecue and more. All proceeds will benefit Bollettino -- a local softball player who was paralyzed in a car accident last year -- and the Sam Schmidt Foundation. Las Vegas site of Senior Worlds The prestigious Senior Softball World Championship is scheduled to take place in Las Vegas in September. More than 300 women's and men's squads from around the world are expected to compete. Three teams from Japan have already committed to play in the event. The VegasWomen's 45-and-older Softball Club needs more players, as well as a 55-and-older squad and 60-and-older squad in Sun City. Those interested can call 631-9410.

BASKETBALL Youth leagues now forming The Sports Club/Las Vegas and Champs Youth Sports are forming youth basketball leagues for ages 8-14, or those students heading into grades three to nine. All levels of experience are welcome to join and all-star teams will be chosen for each level, including a possible travel team. Other events which may be offered include a 3-on-3 tournament and various clinics and camps. The registration fee of $100 ($80 for club members) includes a jersey and SNOA officials. GOLF Women's tournament set for Sept. 11-13 The 2001 Nevada State Women's Amateur Championship and State Senior Championship is slated for Sept. 11-13 at the Wolf Run Golf Club in Reno. The format will be 54-hole stroke play and the field is limited to the first 100 entries received. Entrants must by a member of the Northern Nevada Women's Golf Association or the Women's Southern Nevada Golf Association. Handicap index may not exceed 35.2 at date of entry. Summer Sizzler tourney next week The second annual "Southwest Airlines Summer Sizzler Golf Tournament" is slated for Aug. 8 at Stallion Mountain Golf Course. Close to 300 golfers are expected to participate in the four-man scramble event. A plethora of prizes will be awarded, including a car for a hole in one. ABC tourney scheduled for Aug. 9 The Associated Builders and Contractors of Southern Nevada will hold the 11th annual Contractors' Open Golf Tournament Aug. 9 at the Legacy Golf Club. The event, which will benefit the Southern Nevada chapter's Political Action Committee, will tee off at 7 a.m. Individual and team prizes will be awarded at the tournament, which costs $150 per person, or $560 for a company foursome. Ladies-Only tourney scheduled for Aug. 28 The second annual Learning for Life Ladies-Only Golf Tournament is scheduled for Aug. 28 at Angel Park Golf Club. Boy Scout tourney to begin Oct. 3 The 11th annual Boy Scout Invitational Golf Tournament is scheduled for Oct. 3 at Stallion Mountain Golf Club. The event will benefit the more than 26,000 Boy Scouts in Southern Nevada. The entry fee of $375 per person will include various contests and prizes, including an all-inclusive trip for four to the 2002 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Tournament, as well as lunch, golf, complimentary on-course beverage service and an awards party.
