DEVELOPMENT

Summerlin a finalist

for community award

The Urban Land Institute, a nonprofit education and research institute dedicated to real estate development, has named Summerlin one of two finalists in its 2001 Awards for Excellence competition in the category of new communities.

Established in 1979, the ULI Awards for Excellence program has gained a prestigious reputation. Community projects are evaluated on several criteria, including financial viability, resourceful land use, design, relevance to contemporary issues and sensitivity toward the community and the environment.

"The Summerlin success story is one of the most compelling in the country," said Dan Van Epp, president of Summerlin developers The Howard Hughes Corporation. "Less than one year after the first family moved into Summerlin, it became the country's best-selling master-planned community -- a position held eight of the past nine years."

The award will be presented at ULI's fall conference held in Boston in October.
