GYMNASTICS Meet scheduled at Cimarron-Memorial The Desert Gymcats will host the Cactus Cooler, a national invitational gymnastics meet, March 3-4 at Cimarron-Memorial High School. Close to 300 gymnasts from across the country are expected to compete at the meet, which starts at 8:30 a.m. each day. Teams from Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Colorado, California, Wisconsin and Arizona are entered in the event, along with teams from Nevada, including the Desert Gymcats, the Gymcats, Go For It USA and the Vitaly Scherbo School of Gymnastics. GOLF Tournament to help fund museum The Gordon McCaw School of Mines Golf Tournament is slated for May 5 at the Anthem Revere Golf Course in Henderson. Proceeds from the tournament will help fund the museum operation, a popular field trip destination for Clark County elementary school children. More than 17,000 local students have visited the museum since it opened in 1997. Players of all skill levels are welcome to enter the four-person scramble event and compete for prizes. An awards luncheon will take place after the tournament, which is slated to tee off at 7:30 a.m. Those interested can call tournament organizer Carl Berger at 566-9273, evenings, or call Mary George or Gordon McCaw at 799-8930, days.
TRACK Nevada USA starts its season The Nevada USA Track & Field Organization recently started its season, with an event at Mojave High School on Feb. 10. Those interested in joining a team can call 226-4212 or visit www.usatfn.org or communitylink.koz.com/lvrj/ntfa.
BOXING UNLV to hold collegiate tournament The UNLV Collegiate Invitational Boxing Tournament will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday in the new Dallas Events Center at Texas Station. The tournament will feature 12 bouts between college boxing teams from UNR, Cal Berkeley, the University of Kentucky, Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania and UNLV. Tickets are $20 for ringside seats, $10 for general admission and $5 for UNLV students and children younger than 12. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Nevada Partners Boxing Club of Las Vegas and the North Las Vegas Center Ring Boxing Club. Those interested can call Texas Station at 631-1000. |
