Schools recognized

for library program

Five schools were recognized for efforts to increase reading skills for students in the Clark County School District by working with public libraries.

The program, called Connect for Kids at the Library, required children to visit their neighborhood library, obtain a library card, check out a book, read it and return it by its due date.

The top schools were Kelly, Craig and Booker elementaries, which tied for first place; Eisenberg Elementary, second place; and Deskin Elementary, third place.

It was sponsored by the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce and Clark county School District Business-Education Collaborative; Las Vegas-Clark County Library District; North Las Vegas Library District; Boulder City Library; Henderson District Public Libraries; and McDonald's.

Twin Lakes Elementary School received a financial gift from Sierra Health Services to help fund this year's field trips for students of the special-needs school.

This is the ninth year Sierra Health Services has been a community partner with Twin Lakes. The company's services to the school have included free health and vision screenings, library books, computer equipment, support for special events and activities and ongoing teacher education.

For the last three years, Sierra also has funded an English language course for non-English-speaking parents, including books and child care for their children while they attend the class.
