TOWN BOARD Varied issues planned for special meeting The appointment of an interim town manager, professional opinions about the Mountain Falls project and funding of the Pahrump Valley Fire and Rescue Service are on the agenda for a special Pahrump Town Board meeting at 7 p.m., tomorrow at the Pahrump Community Center, 150 N. Highway 160. SCHOOL BOARD Rezoning discussed at three meetings The Nye County school board will hold three meetings to discuss the rezoning of Pahrump Valley elementary schools, all at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Manse Elementary School gym; Feb. 6 at the J.G. Johnson Elementary School gym and Feb. 7 at the Mount Charleston Elementary School gym. With the completion of the new Rosemary Clarke Middle School, the old middle school will be used to temporarily house elementary school classes. The rezoning will balance out the enrollment at the schools. The school district is planning a new elementary school in the southern part of Pahrump to open in the 2002-2003 school year. Two options will be presented, both call for students south of Gamebird Road to attend the new school. The plans differ on whether to include a section between Gamebird and Dandelion Road from Homestead Road to Vicki Ann Road or extend it farther west to Pahrump Valley Boulevard. NUCLEAR Federal board to meet two days The U.S. Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board will meet at the LongStreet Casino in Amargosa Valley today and tomorrow. The agenda for the 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. session today includes a discussion of technical questions developed by the board. A coffee session will take place from 7:15 to 7:55 a.m. tomorrow, after which there will be a discussion of Yucca Mountain scientific studies from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. LIONS CLUB Scouts to mark Founders Day The Pahrump Valley Lions Club invites the public to a Boy Scouts of America Founders Day Celebration at 6 p.m., Feb. 6 at the Pahrump Community Center, 150 N. Highway 160. The event is a valleywide celebration for the Tiger Cub and Boy Scouts of America with a chili dinner, displays and more. The deadline to RSVP for the dinner is Feb. 1. Those interested may contact Barb Johnston at 751-5356 or e-mail her at jrj1@wizard.com. Counselors 18 years and over are also being sought to help scouts obtain their badges. The aim of the Boy Scouts of America is moral strength and character, followed by participating in citizenship and development of physical, mental and emotional fitness. CRAFTS Fiber arts show open to all The Pahrump Visual and Performing Arts Council will holds its fifth annual Fiber Arts and Crafts Show and Sale Feb. 9-11 at the Pahrump Community Center, 150 N. Highway 160. The show is open to artists and crafters who quilt, weave, embroider, needlepoint, knit, design and create clothing, paper and leather goods, anything that can be created with fiber or natural materials. Show hours are 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10 and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11. An evening reception and fundraiser "Just Desserts" will officially open the show at 7 p.m., Friday. SCHOLARSHIPS Valley Electric offers student aid Valley Electric Association will again offer three $500 scholarships to high school seniors in the spring. The only qualifications are that seniors must have already been accepted to, or have applied to attend, a post high school educational institution. The seniors whose names are drawn must finish their first term of study, carry a full load of classes and show proof they are signed up for a second term with a full load of classes. Application forms are available at Valley Electric by calling 727-5312 or writing to: VEA High School Senior Scholarship Program, c/o Valley Electric Association, P.O. Box 237, Pahrump, Nev. 89041. Pahrump Valley High School counselors also have applications. The form must be received by 5 p.m., April 13. BANKING Board to access local banking needs Valley Bank, which will open its Pahrump branch soon, is forming a Pahrump Valley advisory board. The board will meet quarterly to advise the bank's board of directors and senior officers on how to best meet the banking needs of Pahrump consumers, businesses and professionals. PAGEANT Ms. Senior Nevada needs contestants Anyone who has reached the age of elegance, 60 years of age and older, and has a little talent and a lot of inner beauty, is invited to compete for the title of Ms. Senior Nevada.
