Tonopah Chamber

festival July 27-29

The Tonopah Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual town festival, Jim Butler Days, today through Sunday. Festivities begin July 27, with a street dance. Saturday events will begin with a parade down Main Street and end with evening car races at the Tonopah Speedway.

All three days will feature old-fashioned mining competitions, arts, crafts and food booths, car and bike cruise, plus many townwide events for the entire family.

Public Lands

board meets Aug. 2

The Pahrump Public Lands Board meeting will be held Aug. 2 at 7 p.m. in Room B of the Bob Rudd Community Center.

The Nye County Democratic Party Central Committee will meet Aug. 5 at 5 p.m. in the main fire station.

Nevada Test Site

committee to meet

The Transportation/Low Level Waste Committee of the Community Advisory Board for Nevada Test Site Programs will be meeting at the Pahrump Community Library from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The committee will hear presentations from a representative of the U.S. Department of Energy regarding the criteria for accepting low level radioactive waste at the test site and by a representative from Envirocare, a commercial company located in Utah that operates a low level radioactive waste facility.

4-H Krazy Kritters

to hold fund-raiser

The 4-H Krazy Kritters Small Animal Club is holding its main fund-raising event for this year by by selling raffle tickets to help earn money for equipment and travel costs for an upcoming trip to San Diego. The raffle tickets are available at the Cooperative Extension office at 1651 E. Calvada Blvd., Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to noon, or by calling 727-5532.

Youth registration

meeting on Saturday

If you have registered your child(ren) for the fall soccer season you must attend one of the mandatory parent meetings on Saturday at J.G. Johnson Elementary. Sign-in begins at 9:30 a.m. and the meeting begins at 10.

VOLUNTEERS

Chamber seeks

visitor greeters

The Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce is looking for volunteers to greet visitors from all over the world. Candidates should be cheerful and outgoing. A knowledge of Pahrump and the surrounding area is a plus.

Hours are flexible and can range from three to eight hours a day, and one to five days a week. In addition to Monday through Friday, the Welcome Center will be open on Saturday.

Interested parties should contact the Chamber of Commerce at 727-8500 to schedule an interview.

FUND-RAISER

Relay for Life

set for Aug. 18

The Relay for Life Cancer fund-raiser will be held Aug. 18 and 19 at the Pahrump Valley High School track, with registration beginning at 5:30 p.m. A light reception will follow the survivor lap for those participants and a guest. Only cancer survivors walk in the first lap.

Family to Family

classes through July

Family to Family Connection, 160 S. Emery St., is conducting free parent/infant classes through the end of the month. The classes include: storytime/make a book, clothing giveaway, sign with baby, CPR, zip, snap, rip craft, developmental screenings, immunization class and clinic, and clinic on wheels bus (well-baby check-up and shots).

Also, come enjoy the company of other parents and their babies at the Thursday Playgroup.

PVHS fall sports

registration begins

Registration packets for fall sports (football, volleyball, soccer, cross country and girl's golf) are available at the Pahrump Valley High School office. Returning athletes who had a physical after August 2000 may not be required to have another.

The registration/health questionnaire must be completed by the athlete and parent then reviewed by the school nurse. The nurse will be available at the mandatory preseason parent/athlete meetings on Aug. 6 at 6 and 7:30 p.m.

Current eighth-graders can pick up registration packets for their freshman year at Rosemary Clarke Middle School and will be required to have a physical by a licensed medical practitioner. Call the PVHS Athletic Office after Aug. 1 at 727-7908 for more information.

PAGEANTS

Contestants needed

for Ms. Senior Nevada Women 60 years of age and older are welcome to participate in the Ms. Senior Nevada Pageant, to be held Sept. 16 at the River Palms Resort in Laughlin.

Contestants are graded 25 percent by their talent, 25 percent from an evening gown competition, 25 percent for their philosophy of life and 25 percent on an interview with judges.

Host families are needed for high school students from Europe, Japan and Korea.

Students will arrive in August to attend local public schools for one or two semesters and are eager to experience life in America. They speak English, have their own spending money and medical insurance, and expect to share their host family's daily life including household responsibilities. BOWLING

Club seeks bowlers

for fund-raiser

The Pahrump branch of Big Brothers/Big Sisters is in need of bowlers for its first Bowl For Kids Sake event on Aug. 18, 19, 25 and 26 at either 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. or 3 p.m. The only prerequisite is each bowler must be able to raise a minimum of $50.

There is no age limit, and the bowling shoes and a ball are free if bowlers don't have them. There will be food, fun and prizes, with special prizes for the top fund-raisers. It is not a league, but a fund-raising event. Contestants don't have to be good bowlers, they don't even have to know how to bowl.

To be a successful fund-raiser, Big Brothers/Big Sisters would like 192 teams of four bowlers each for a total of 768 bowlers; to date, 13 teams have committed to bowl. Anyone who wants to sign up or needs more information is asked to call Bonnie Wittig at 751-0143 during business hours or 751-2700 on evenings and weekends. The Pahrump Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization also meets at 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays at 1191 E. Fourth St., Suite B.
