BENEFIT Cancer society plans gala at Hilton The American Cancer Society's 2001 Denim or Diamonds Gala is set for Saturday from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the Las Vegas Hilton. Guests can come dressed in western style, formal wear or a combination of both. The event will feature food, an informal southwestern fashion show and live music from the Community College of Southern Nevada Jazz Sextet and from Restoration, a local band made up of four physicians and an attorney. Live and silent auction items like a one-hour ride in a police department helicopter, a day with Mayor Oscar Goodman or a "walk-on" in the next movie filmed in Las Vegas will be up for bid. Tickets are $150 per person or $1,500 for a table of ten. They can be purchased in advance or at the door. Proceeds from the event will assist the American Cancer Society with cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services. For more information call 798-6877 Ext. 247.
MUSIC Battle of bands at several venues WorldFolk's Third Annual Battle of the Bands Festival will bring over 100 bands to venues all over Las Vegas throughout June. Local bands and solo artists will face off against musicians from California, Arizona and Utah with judging in stage presence, audience response and song writing. Competition venues include: Hooters, 5675 W. Sahara Ave., June 9; Moose McGillycuddy's, 4770 S. Maryland Pkwy., June 10; Olympic Garden, 1531 S. Las Vegas Blvd., June 11 and 25; Tongue N' Groove, 713 Ogden Ave., June 14; The Junkyard, 2327 S. Eastern Ave., June 15; Legends Lounge, 865 N. Lamb Blvd., June 18 and 26; The Boston Grill & Bar, 3417 S. Jones Blvd., June 12, 17 and 19; The Cooler Lounge, 1905 N. Decatur Blvd., June 21 and 28; and Fremont St. Experience, June 22. Additional dates are being planned for Game Works. The final round venue and time are yet to be announced. Most shows begin at 8 p.m. and cover charges vary by venue. WorldFolk is a volunteer-run, local group dedicated to promoting culture through a diversity of music, art, poetry, dance. THEATER Murder Cafe has new production Murder Cafe will present their newest dinner theater production "Talked to Death" June 21 at Philips Supper House, 4545 W. Sahara Ave. "Audience members will interact with seven colorful characters, be treated to mayhem, murder and music and be served dinner courses between scenes," said producer and playwright Kristen Marquette. GOLF UNLV celebrity classic June 22 The second annual UNLV Celebrity Classic golf tournament is slated for 1 p.m. June 22 at the TPC at the Canyons. The event, which costs $135 per player, will benefit the UNLV Continuing Education Golf Management Certificate Program. Raffles, prizes, an awards ceremony and barbecue are planned. Women's amateur tourney starts Monday The Women's Southern Nevada Golf Association's Amateur Championship is slated for Monday and Tuesday at Anthem Country Club. The format is 36-hole stroke play and the field is limited to the first 120 entries received. A $150 entry fee includes green fees, cart, prize fund and awards luncheon. Perry Bobo classic set for June 15 The third annual Perry Bobo Memorial Golf Classic is slated for 1:30 p.m. June 15 at the TPC at the Canyons. The proceeds will benefit the ALS Association Nevada Chapter. The entry fee of $250 per golfer includes tournament play and reception, food, awards presentation and raffles. The mission of the ALS Association Nevada Chapter is to help find a cure for ALS, aka Lou Gehrig's Disease, and to improve the lives of people living with the disease.
