Clark County Parks & Recreation is planning to celebrate Nevada Free fishing Day with a fishing derby. Saturday, June 9 county residents are invited to Sunset Park Lake, 2601 E. Sunset Road, where fishing competition will run from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Residents of all ages can fish free of charge, without a license. Prizes for first, second and third places will be awarded in five age categories 0-7 years old, 8-12 years old, 13-17 years old, 18-55 years old and 55 or older. Although fishing licenses are not required all Nevada fishing rules still apply. At the last big county derby held in December, a sponsorship from Raley's Supermarkets's provided bait and tackle for all participants plus a heap of prizes. So far no big sponsors have come forward for the upcoming derby. County representative, Brian Saliba, said that means everyone will have to bring his or her own bait and fishing poles this time around. "We're still looking for sponsorship. But the event will happen with or without it," Saliba said. The Nevada Division of Wildlife will stock the lake with catfish right before the event begins. Each participant is limited to a two fish catch and judging will be for catfish only. An award ceremony will be held right after the derby around noon at the south end of the lake. Saliba and event organizer Lyon Davis have gathered prizes from donors all over the Valley. Participants can fish for thrill-ride passes, sporting event tickets and gift certificates to local businesses. Traditional fishermen who demand absolute silence won't get it. Radio station 97.1 The Point plans to keep the fish and the crowd jumping with a live remote broadcast throughout the event. Food and drink booths will be joined by Peak Performance Chiropractors who will perform on-site evaluations and do face painting for children. "Everyone can expect snow cones, pizza and drinks so that if it's a real hot day we'll be able to quench their thirst," Saliba said. Additional event sponsors will be welcome until the first fishing line flies, or even after. Saliba said they're still looking for sponsors for the next derby to be held in December. Potential sponsors can contact a Parks & Recreation representative at 455-8838. Residents with questions about the derby can call 455-8271. |
