The McCaw School of Mines, 47 Lynn Lane, uses volunteer docents. Some are senior citizens, but others are students from McCaw Elementary, on whose property the mine sits. Here, Michael Lunen, 11, Will Petrovich, 10 and Bryce Erickson, 10, tell students from Ruthe Deskin Elementary about items used in the mines. The three pupils had to pass a test to become part of the 60 fourth-graders that help on the tour.

MCCAW SCHOOL OF MINES: Historical perspective

The work involves going into a 100-foot deep mine, dealing with tools that by today's standards would be outlawed for being so old, so dangerous. Perhaps most surprising, these workers are only 10- and 11-year-olds.
