CONCERT Youth orchestra performs Saturday The Las Vegas Youth Camerata Orchestra, under the direction of Oscar Carrescia will present "A Vivaldi Festival" at the Winchester Community Center this Saturday at 2 p.m. The 30-member ensemble will perform a program featuring works by Vivaldi plus the world premiere of "Moments for Vibraphone and Orchestra" by former Las Vegas resident Tommy Vig, who is scheduled to perform as the soloist. The composer has scored feature films ranging from "They Call Me Bruce!" to "Texas Lightning." Tickets sell for $2 either in advance or at the door. For more information, call 455-7340.
LECTURE View of love in different cultures "Culture and Love: A View From Around the World" is the topic of a lecture set for March 15 at UNLV. Tom Gregor, an anthropology professor from Vanderbilt University is scheduled to present his findings on various cultures including the Mehinaku Indians of Brazil, a group that tries to discourage love relationships from forming among its members. Gregor will explore the ways the power of love brings people together even when the cultures don't support it. The free public lecture is set for 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History on the UNLV campus. For more information call 895-3401. |
