Library gallery

showcases photos

The art gallery at West Charleston Library, 6301 W. Charleston Blvd., is exhibiting the work of photographer Lia Chang, now through June 10. Chang's pieces feature pictures of notable Asian Americans. The exhibit is part of Celebrate Asian Pacific Heritage Month.

Chang will give a slide show presentation of her work May 31 at 7:30. A reception will follow.

Concert Bell choir

to perform May 23

The First Concert Series of First Presbyterian Church of Las Vegas will present the Westminster Concert Bell Choir of Westminster Choir College Rider University in concert in the sanctuary of Green Valley Presbyterian Church, 1798 Wigwam Parkway, May 23 at 7:30 p.m..

The 13-member Westminster Concert Bell Choir is comprised of undergraduate and graduate students at Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton, N.J.. Its director if Kathleen Ebling-Thorne. The choir's 2001 season includes a national concert tour to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Westminster Choir College, as well as the choir's debut performance at Carnegie Hall and a live performance on NBC-TV's "Today Show."

Hailed for its virtuosity, the Westminster Concert Bell Choir uses the largest range of hand bells in the world -- 7 1/2 octaves, from G1 to C9. Many of the bells are made of bronze and range in weight from four ounces to 11 pounds; the Choir also uses the large "Basso Profundo" aluminum-cast bells that are a new phenomenon in hand bell ringing. The Choir has appeared on Public Television's "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" and the 1997 Christmas Day broadcast of the "Today" show.

This concert is open to the public and a freewill offering will be taken.

Class offers help

getting college money

If the cost of a college education is looming over your head, try this class. The Johnson Community School, 340 Villa Monterey, will hold a scholarship, grant writing and research workshop May 19, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The informational class is geared for for high school juniors and seniors and their parents. They will learn how to get money for education, who has the funds and how to write the applications. Workshop lecturer Ria Watson will even offer hands-on training. Cost is $30 for students and their parents. Call 229-6175 for more information.

CONCERTS

Springfest III

helps good cause

A musical feast will be served up at Springfest III and, best of all, it will benefit a great cause. The concert will be held May 12 at Faith Lutheran High School's outdoor amphitheater, 2015 S. Haualipai Way, 4-9 p.m.

The line up of performers includes Mel Carter, Clint Holmes, Bill Acosta, Paige O'Hara, Michael Piontek, Sonny Turner, Woody Woods and The Scintas. Tickets are $25 and proceeds will benefit the Las Vegas Charter School of the Deaf. Food and beverage will be available so families can make a picnic of the event.

Saxophonist Bob Sheppard will explain "Jazz Improvisation: What Are Those Musicians Doing, and How Do They Do It?" set to take place tonight in the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas at 7:30 p.m.

Sheppard will present music selections as wll as make a speaking presentation. He will be accompanied by the UNLV Jazz Faculty Trio made up of Stefan Karlsson, Tom Warrington and Chris Benham.

UNLV faculty to

receive Barrick Awards

Four University of Nevada, Las Vegas faculty members were selected to received Barrick Awards for the 2000-20001 academic year. Distinguished Scholar recipients English Professor John Bowers, English professor Mark Weinstein and history professor Hal Rothman will each receive a $5,000 cash award. Tourism and convention administration professor Zheng Gu received a cash award of $2,500 as the Barrick Scholar award winner.

The awards recognize professors for excellence in research and creative activity.

Student art exhibit

at UNLV

The Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas is hosting their annual juried student art exhibition now through May 5. The exhibition will feature undergraduate and graduate student works in a variety of media including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture and ceramics.

Gallery admission is free and open to the public. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday -Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Visitor parking is available off Cottage Grove Avenue in the parking lot north of Artemus Ham Concert Hall.
