GOLF

Silverado tourney

set for Saturday

The annual Silverado football golf tournament is scheduled for Saturday at the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort. The entry fee of $125 includes golf, prizes and an awards dinner. Tee sponsorships are $100 apiece and proceeds from the event will be used for equipment and supplies. Gregory tourney

scheduled for Monday

The third annual Ann Gregory Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament is scheduled for Monday at the Stallion Mountain Golf Course. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Urban Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Program.

A continental breakfast will be served at the course and a box lunch donated by the House of Blues will be available on the course. An awards banquet is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at The Venetian.

Championships set

for play in Mesquite

The 2002 Nevada State Women's Amateur Championship and State Senior Championship is slated for Sept. 6-8 at the Casablanca Golf Course in Mesquite. The format is 54-hole stroke play and the field is limited to the first 100 entries received. A $190 entry fee includes golf, a welcome event, tee gift, awards luncheon and prizes.

Competitors must be members of the Women's Southern Nevada Golf Association or the Northern Nevada Women's Golf Association, with a maximum handicap of 36. Those interested can call 458-4653 or visit www.nevadawomensgolf.org.

Volunteers sought

for golf tourney

Volunteers are needed for the 20th annual Invensys Classic at Las Vegas, which is scheduled from Oct. 9-13 at the TPC at Summerlin, the TPC at The Canyons and the Southern Highlands Golf Club. Volunteers are needed in three committees: group hosts, scorers and gallery control.

All tournament volunteers must pay a $25 fee to defray expenses. In return, volunteers will receive a volunteer badge to enter the tournament all five days; a season badge for a guest ($50 value); wholesale prices on FootJoy golf shoes; a volunteer uniform (shirt, hat, socks, tournament pin); coffee, donuts and a box lunch on days working; and a post-tournament volunteer party.

The 2002 Nevada State Women's Golf Association's Four Person Team Championship is scheduled for Aug. 19 and 20 at the Thunder Canyon Country Club in northern Nevada. The entry fee of $660 per team includes prizes and an awards luncheon.

Blazers clinic

starts Monday

The 10th annual Blazers Volleyball Clinic is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Aug. 15 at Durango High School.

BASEBALL

Registration open

for Tee-ball camp

Registration for the Tiny Tyke Tee-Ball Camp will be offered until Aug. 16. The baseball camp, which is open to children ages 3-5, is scheduled from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 17, 24 and 31. The registration fee of $40 includes a T-shirt and participation award.

The camp will give parents a chance to teach their children the fundamentals of the game under staff supervision. Those interested can call 455-7050.

Metro Showcase

set for Aug. 17

The second annual Metro Showcase, a baseball event sponsored by the Southern Nevada AAU, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 17 at Burkholder Field in Henderson.

The event is designed to showcase local players, who will each be evaluated and have a scouting report sent to college coaches and professional scouts.

Each player at the event will also have the chance to try out for the Metro Stars traveling team, which is slated to compete in several national tournaments in the fall.

The Henderson Sports Association recreational "POPs" softball league for men, ages 40 and older, is offering registration for its fall season. Those interested can call Dan Roberts at 614-8081. The inaugural over-40 men's league attracted more than 100 players.

The city of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department will accept registration for its fall adult softball leagues starting Monday (Aug. 12).

The registration fee is $425 per team and must be made in person at the Arroyo Grande Sports Complex, located at 298 Arroyo Grande Blvd. League play is slated to start the week of Sept. 16.

There are several leagues available, including men's and co-rec leagues. Those interested can call 434-4134.

RECREATION

Workshops offered

throughout August

The Clark County Parks & Community Services is sponsoring several Adventure Recreation workshops, ranging from archery to sailing, during the month of August.

Preregistration, which is encouraged, will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Sunset Park Adventure Recreation Office, located at 2601 E. Sunset Road.

A two-hour archery course is slated from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and introductions to rock climbing, sailing and gold prospecting are also scheduled in August, along with Laser Quest Tag. Those interested can call 455-8289.

CHEERLEADING

Extreme squad

The Extreme Cheer All-Stars, a competitive cheerleading squad in Las Vegas, is looking for girls in grades six through 12.

The season runs from August to March and practices are scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

BOWLING

Diversity tourney

set at casinos

A Diversity Doubles and Singles bowling tournament is scheduled for Aug. 16-18 at Santa Fe Station and Texas Station.

Tournament champions will receive $5,000 for first place in doubles and $2,500 for first place in singles. The entry fee is $150 per bowler and $250 for each bowler who requires hotel accommodations ($360 for double-occupancy rooms). Participants will each bowl three games of singles and doubles.

The event celebrates the tenure of Thomas DeChalus, the first black American to serve as president of the American Bowling Congress. Until 1950, no black or Asian players were permitted to bowl in ABC or Women's International Bowling Congress sanctioned events.

This local event is sanctioned by both the ABC and WIBC, whose Joint Diversity Committee will hold a diversity forum at 2 p.m. Aug. 17 at Texas Station. Those interested can call Texas Station at 631-1000.

BASKETBALL

Henderson to

start adult leagues

The city of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department will accept registration for its adult basketball leagues starting at 10 a.m. Monday. Registration is $300 per team and must be made in person at the Sports Office, located at 298 Arroyo Grande Blvd.

Teams can choose from two leagues, which are both open to ages 16 and older -- Monday and Wednesday nights or Tuesday and Thursday nights. League play is slated to start the week of Sept. 9. Those interested can call 434-4134.

FOOTBALL

League seeks players

for girls division

The Henderson Flag Football League, which is sponsored by the National Football League, is looking for girls, ages 11-14, to play in its girls division. While the league fielded 80 teams and 110 cheerleaders last season, it needs more girls to fill the division.

The registration fee of $75 includes a reversible NFL jersey, pants, socks, trophies, a picnic, 10 league games and tournament play. Those interested can call 898-0088. The league starts play Sept. 7.
