DONATIONS

Henderson chamber

gives to youth groups

The Henderson Chamber of Commerce donated $2,000 to both the Boys & Girls Club of Henderson and the Henderson-based Boy Scout Troop #37 in early August. The combined $4,000 represents proceeds earned during the 2002 Heritage Days Car Show held this spring.

Both the Boys & Girls Club of Henderson and Troop #37 help improve the quality of life in Henderson. The chamber is proud to help support them, said Ron Meek, chamber president and provost of the Henderson campus of the Community College of Southern Nevada.

Early voting

begins tomorrow

Early voting for the primary elections will start tomorrow and last through Aug. 30 at several locations throughout Clark County. Permanent early primary voting sites include the Galleria at Sunset mall, Belz Factory Outlet World, The Boulevard mall, Fashion Show mall, Meadows mall and the Clark County Government Center.

City council, planning

commission to meet

The Henderson City Council is scheduled to have a regular meeting Tuesday. The planning commission is scheduled to meet next on Aug. 29. City meetings are held at City Hall, 240 Water St., at 7 p.m. Those interested in obtaining a commission agenda can call 565-2474 and for a council agenda call the city clerk's office at 565-2058.

Astronomical Society

plans skyward viewing

The Astronomical Society of Nevada, Las Vegas has scheduled a free public event tomorrow sponsored by the World Discoveries store of Henderson. From 6 to 10 p.m.

Get hands-on telescope experience with the help of astronomical experts. The gathering begins with a telescope clinic at 6 p.m. followed by a demonstration of Steve Belew's astronomy software and ending with a few sights of the universe observed through telescopes.

The World Discoveries store of Henderson is located at the northeast corner of Green Valley Parkway and Sunset Road, just behind Joe's Crab Shack. People of all ages are welcome to attend. Directions, as well as more information about the club and upcoming events can be found on the Web at www.astronomynv.org/vegas. The weather may force a cancellation.

August filled with

special happenings

The city of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department has scheduled several events this month, including a poolside concert, children's tea party and a free senior fair.

A poolside performance by Tamaeva Arii is planned tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the Whitney Ranch Activity Pool, 1575 Galleria Drive. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for youth and seniors. The concert is the final event in the Poolside Rhythms summer concert series. For more information, call 565-2367.

Two tea party workshops are scheduled this month for children (ages 4 to 8) entitled "Miss Victoria's Tea Party." Each event is scheduled from noon to 2 p.m. tomorrow at Silver Springs Recreation Center, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway, and Aug. 24 at Whitney Ranch Recreation Center. Clothes collected for

kids in need

The Salvation Army will be collecting new back to school clothes, shoes and backpacks for kids in need at the Galleria at Sunset mall, 1300 W. Sunset Road, through Sunday. Those interested can bring items to the upper level in the J.C. Penney Court during mall hours.

DOWNTOWN

Farmer's Market

every Thursday

The Downtown Henderson Farmer's Market is open for business every Thursday on Water Street between Victory Road and Pacific Street.

The market, which is sponsored by the city's redevelopment agency, attracts an average of nearly 1,200 shoppers each week looking for fresh produce, hand-made arts and crafts and other goods.

Summer hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. and admission is free. Live music or performers are scheduled most weeks. Those interested can call 565-2181.
