During a survey of 228 Pahrump Valley High School seniors, 43 percent said they planned to attend a four-year college, 23.3 percent will go to a two-year college, 47.4 percent plan to work full or part-time and 12.3 percent plan to enter the military.
In a report to the school board, Nye County School District Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum Wil Booker said for the last three years, Life Track Services has conducted an exit survey of the senior class.
School board president Nancy Sollinger said she was concerned 57 percent of the seniors replied their high school experience didn't make learning exciting or encourage them to continue their education. Trustee Bobbi Hommel thought that was just because of the students' age.
Sollinger also noted when it came to holding high standards or demanding quality work, 15 percent said their teachers were either below average or needed improvement. She also wanted to know why 38 percent ranked Pahrump Valley High School either below average or needing improvement when it comes to providing a strong foundation in technology.
Pahrump Valley High School drew good grades in other areas. An overwhelming majority, 84.2 percent, said school counselors were helpful on their path to graduation and making future plans. An equal percentage said they thought they had the academic skills to be successful after high school and, in replying to another question, said they would be able to easily find a job to support themselves.
When asked whether they ever experienced significant harassment from other students, 85 percent said no. Two-thirds of the respondents said they had a positive learning experience at high school. Fifty-eight percent said the high school ranked average or better when it came to providing a safe and drug-free environment. When it came to fully preparing them for the transition to college or the work place, 25 percent ranked Pahrump Valley High School in the excellent category, 27 percent ranked it in the good category, 30 percent said it was average.
