Goldfield celebrates
100th birthday
The historic mining town of Goldfield will be celebrating its 100th birthday with a grand Goldfield Centennial Celebration today and tomorrow and its Third Annual Millennium Land Rush Festival. A street dance, parade, swap meet, horseshoes, gold panning and a treasure hunt are planned.
Ice cream social
set for Aug. 31
Our Lady of the Valley is holding a Hop Ice Cream Social and Classic Car show on Aug. 31, 1 to 8 p.m. in the church parking lot and hall, located at the corner of Gamebird Road and Pahrump Valley Boulevard. There will be music from the '40s, '50s and '60s played by disc jockeys, plus a large selection of ice cream delights prepared by soda jerks. There will be hamburgers, cheeseburgers and hot dogs prepared by a short order cook. There will also be a variety of beverages, plus popcorn, cotton candy and caramel apples.

Clarke registration
to start Monday
Rosemary Clarke Middle School registration for all students will be opened up on Monday. In order to register a student, the following documents are required: birth certificate, Social Security number and immunization record. Parents are encouraged to register student(s) before the beginning of the school year, so they will already be enrolled and will have a schedule for the first day of school. For answers to any questions regarding enrollment, call the office at 727-5546, ext. 2100.
Manse accepting
student enrollments
Manse Elementary School is accepting student enrollments. Hours will be from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. for those who are new to the community. The address is 1020 E. Wilson St. The first day of school is Sept. 3.
CCSN classes
start Sept. 3
Classes for the Fall 2002 semester at CCSN begin on Sept. 3. CCSN bookstore representatives will be at Pahrump Valley Center today and Monday and Sept. 4 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for textbook purchases. Students are strongly encouraged to register before the scheduled class time, so as to meet the minimum enrollment necessary to allow the class to meet.
School immunizations
at clinic next week
Southern Nye County Community Health Nurse, Nevada State Division of Health, is having a Back to School Walk-In Immunization clinic Monday through Aug. 29, 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. (Closed Tuesday morning), Sept. 3, 1 to 4 p.m. and Sept. 4, 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. No appointment is necessary during those hours at 250 N. Highway 160 No. 6 (County Complex just north of Basin Road). Call 751-7070 for more information.
Sign-ups set for
learning center
Fall sign-ups for 21st Century Community Learning Center Safe Schools project will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the SAFE Schools office in the south building of the temporary Hafen Elementary at 2000 S. Mount Charleston Blvd., on a "first come, first served basis." Programs will be held before and after school at each of the four elementaries for Grades 1-5, after school at Rosemary Clarke Middle School for grades 6-8 and Pahrump Valley High School for Grades 9-12. Available student hours at each of the elementaries will be from 6:45 to approximately 8:15 a.m. when they begin reporting to class and 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. after school. There is no cost for students to participate in the program.
Additional adults are needed to volunteer their expertise in an area that may be interesting to youth. Anyone wishing to volunteer time and have a particular skill to share with students, call the SAFE Schools office at 751-6825.

Shop for halfway
house for women
"Shop Under Lights at Night" fund-raiser and rummage sale will be held at Highway Motors, 1190 Highway 372 Saturday, Sunday and Monday to 10 p.m.
All proceeds go toward start-up costs for Visions in Pahrump, a halfway house for chemical dependent women. There will be a karaoke sing-along and hot coffee.
Quilts to be
raffled for Safe Night
Win a quilt! Donated to raise funds for Halloween Safe Night. The quilt is on display at Coyote Cafe. Tickets are $5 each and are on sale at Gold Crest Construction, Coyote Cafe and SLT Computers Inc. The drawing will be held Oct. 31. The winner need not be present.
Salvation Army
sock hop tomorrow
The Salvation Army of Pahrump will be having a 1950s-style sock hop from 7 to 11 p.m. tomorrow at the Pahrump Community Center. The event, one of several fund-raisers planned in the coming months, is geared toward adults and young adults. There will be a dance contest and prizes. Tickets are priced at $10 for singles and $15 for couples and are on sale at the Salvation Army Thrift Store, the Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce and from Salvation Army advisory board members. Dodge truck
The Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce is raffling off a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 truck. Tickets are $100 with a limited number of 370. The drawing will take place Oct. 4 at the Pahrump Harvest Festival Rodeo. The winner does not have to be present to win, but is responsible for tax and licensing fees. Chamber board members, staff and their spouses are not eligible to participate. Tickets may be purchased at the chamber office, 1301 S. Highway 160, second floor, or by calling 727-5800.

Harvest festival

Join your friends and make new friends; volunteer to assist in the Exhibit Hall for Harvest Festival. Quilts 4 Cancer
takes Tuesdays off
Quilts 4 Cancer is on summer recess for the Tuesday work days at the Quilted Dragon in Pahrump. Many adults in Pahrump are in need of cancer comfort quilts. Even with the 100-plus degree weather, cancer patients can get cold as a reaction to chemotherapy.
Anyone is interested in doing simple sewing of these quilts for area residents can pick up a kit at The Quilted Dragon, 2850 S. Yucca Terrace, Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 751-9033 for details.
Tax deductible donations are still being sought for the purchase of a used industrial machine for mass volume sewing. All service clubs and casinos have been sent a letter of request.

Progressive Choices Inc. thrift store is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Furniture, clothes, bikes, microwaves are on sale. Clothing outreach
set for Fridays
The Benevolence Committee of the First Southern Baptist Church sponsors a clothing outreach on Fridays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The program is designed for those who need clothing for their family. The church is located on North Highway 160 and Fehrs.

Drivers sought
for veterans van
Volunteer drivers are needed to drive local veterans in the Disabled American Veterans van to the Las Vegas Veterans Affairs Medical Center and to the Pahrump VA clinic. Anyone interested can call Carol at 751-0774.

Food Bank/Soup Kitchen of Nye County, located at 390 S Buol Lane is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Canned foods, soaps, jars and plastic containers, etc. are needed. Second Annual School Supply Drive will help to insure children have a successful school year by providing them with the proper supplies. Donations needed are new (or in good condition) pens, pencils, paper, backpacks, scissors, glue, crayons, erasers, binders, etc. Cash donations will also be accepted. Peace poster
contest announced
The Lions International Peace Poster contest was created in 1988 to give young people an opportunity to express their feelings about peace. Since then, more than two million children from approximately 65 countries have participated in the annual contest. This year, the topic is "Dream of Peace" and the contest is open to all young people, 11-13 years of age. All entrants must use the official kit provided by the Pahrump Valley Lions, that can be obtained free of charge by leaving a message for Irene at 727-9016. Poster kits must be ordered by Sept. 15. Complete rules will be included with the kits.

The Pahrump Valley Lions Club is sponsoring the display of The Moving Wall, a half-size replica of the Washington, D.C., Vietnam Veterans Memorial, from Oct. 27 through Nov. 2 in Pahrump. The Lions Club welcomes the support of all who would like to help Southern Nevada pay tribute to the men and women who gave their lives in the Vietnam War.
